Just then, a sharp knock at the door broke the silence.
Nathalie opened her eyes and looked over. Through the frosted glass, she could make out the silhouette of a tall, broad-shouldered man standing in the hallway.
She checked the time on her phone. It was past eight in the evening. Who could it be?
She walked over and pulled the door open, finding one of the security details standing awkwardly in the hall.
Seeing her, the bodyguard practically jumped, instinctively taking a half-step back. "Mrs. Adams. Mr. Adams isn't doing so well. Could you come take a look at him?"
Nathalie's heart skipped a beat. She immediately pulled up her app and typed frantically. The robotic voice asked: "What's wrong with him?"
The bodyguard shook his head. "I'm not exactly sure, but it looks like he's... unconscious."
Without hesitating, Nathalie sprinted down the hall toward Lance's suite.
"Mrs. Adams, please, slow down!" the bodyguard called out, scrambling after her.
Nathalie ignored him and burst into the room. Lance was lying motionless on the bed. His face was ghostly pale, his lips dry and slightly parted as he murmured something unintelligible.
With his eyes covered by the thick bandages, it was impossible to read his expression.
Nathalie rushed to his side, grabbed his hand, and began tracing letters into his palm.
—*What's wrong?*
He didn't respond to the touch.
She could barely catch the faint, broken whispers escaping his lips. Nathalie leaned in closer, practically hovering over him, her ear inches from his mouth so she could hear what he was saying.
"Nathalie, it hurts... It hurts so much..."
The murmurs were incredibly faint, almost ghostly. It took her several seconds to decipher the words.
Her chest instantly tightened with an overwhelming pang of sympathy. She squeezed his hand firmly.
As if sensing her presence, the restless agony on his face slowly began to ease. His breathing steadied, and the painful murmurs finally faded away.
Seeing him calm down, Nathalie let out a quiet sigh of relief. He must have just been trapped in a terrible nightmare.
