Aaron instantly caught her meaning, and a matching coldness appeared on his face.
"We might not be able to replicate this exact poison, but blinding someone is easy enough."
Nathalie typed again, the robotic voice ringing out icily. "And her legs too. Jasper will have to rely on a wheelchair for the rest of his life. Why should she get to stand?"
"Understood," Aaron nodded. Making Felice James wish she were dead was indeed the best course of action.
...
Nathalie returned to Lance's room. The bodyguard at the door blinked in surprise and opened his mouth to announce her.
Nathalie quickly pressed a finger to her lips, shushing him.
The bodyguard froze, looking completely lost.
Should he listen to the boss or Mrs. Adams?
Whatever. He'd just pretend he saw nothing. The bodyguard turned his head and stared blankly down the hall.
Nathalie walked in and pushed the door open.
Heavy, tortured gasps filled the room. The man on the bed was in so much pain he didn't even hear the door open.
It wasn't until someone stood by the bed and gently touched his face that he reacted.
The cool touch. The familiar, unique scent that belonged only to her.
Lance stiffened.
"Nathalie, why are you here?" he asked hoarsely.
Instead of answering, she gently traced his face. Her fingertips landed lightly on his temples, massaging them in soft, soothing circles.
Lance grabbed her hand. "You know?" he asked, his voice strained.
Nathalie's finger moved, tapping a confirmation against his palm.
Lance's greed flared again. He murmured, "Come up here. Let me hold you. That will make me feel much better."
Within moments, Nathalie nudged him, making him shift over to give her some space. Then, her soft, warm body settled beside him.
Lance wrapped his arms around her without hesitation. "You do feel sorry for me."
Nathalie tried to write on his palm again, but he caught her hand. "This is perfect just the way it is."
Looking at his pale face, she felt the sheer absurdity of the situation. She knew he was taking advantage, yet she couldn't bear to see him suffer.
She felt incredibly sad. They had been at such odds, and she was always so defensive around him. So why did he still go to such lengths to protect her?
A bitter taste coated her mouth. She decided to stop overthinking and closed her eyes, simply lying beside him.
The scent of antiseptic in the air was unpleasant, yet somehow, she felt a profound sense of security. Exhaustion dragged her down, and her eyelids grew heavy.
Soon, her steady, even breathing filled the silence. Listening to her sleep, Lance's lips curved into a smile. He gently pressed a kiss to her temple, then lay perfectly still, afraid to wake her.
