Chapter 669

The moment the message went through, Lance sent a voice note back. She tapped it, and the man’s deep, magnetic voice drifted out softly.

“Did you get scared, Nathalie?”

What was with this tone, like he was coaxing a child?

Nathalie locked her phone and refused to reply.

Downstairs.

Bagot was on a video call with Lance.

Mid-conversation, Lance abruptly hung up. While Bagot was still confused, Lance called back.

Bagot asked in bewilderment, “Lance, what were you just doing?”

Lance’s tone was flat. “None of your business.”

Bagot: “…Anyway, that’s the gist of what happened today. You had Neely look into Elara Lane, but honestly, I think she’s telling the truth. She shouldn’t be playing us.”

Lance replied coldly, “And why did you skip over your own performance today?”

Hearing this, Bagot bristled instantly. “Who? Who ratted me out?”

Lance scoffed. “Bagot, you lack any sense of composure. You panic at the slightest complication and act without thinking of the consequences. How can I trust you to go find Damaris?”

Bagot’s expression froze. After a long pause, he admitted, “Lance, I’m just anxious. Seriously, every single night I dream of her being dragged away from our wedding. I’ve almost reached her so many times, but I always miss her by an inch…”

Pain seeped into his voice. “I’m just so damn anxious.”

“But without a solid lead on her whereabouts, what good does panicking do? Use this time to ground yourself. Once you actually mature, we might have news on her, and you’ll be ready to bring her home,” Lance shot him down ruthlessly.

Bagot’s voice tightened. “I get it.”

“Be steady. Don’t make me disappointed in you,” Lance said, then hung up.

Bagot lay beside his phone, staring at the ceiling. After a long while, he let out a heavy sigh.

The next morning.

Nathalie opened her eyes and felt an intense irritation in her throat. She rushed to the bathroom, dry heaved violently, and spat out a mouthful of black blood.

Seeing this, she didn’t flush the toilet. Instead, she went straight to find Elara.

She dragged Elara out of bed.

“What’s wrong? What is it?”

Elara was still half-asleep. It wasn’t until she was yanked into the adjacent room that she managed to

ask.

Nathalie pulled her into the bathroom, pointed at the black blood in the toilet bowl, and then pointed at her own throat to indicate she had just coughed it up.

Elara yawned, stared at her face, and said, “Open your mouth.”

Nathalie obediently opened her mouth, remnants of black blood still staining her teeth.

Then, Elara checked her pulse. She had her eyes closed, her head bobbing up and down as if she were about to fall asleep standing up.

Nathalie pressed her lips together, feeling a surge of anxiety.

Was Elara really going to pass out right here?

Should she wake her up?

Just as she hesitated, Elara let go of her wrist and grabbed her other hand.

A moment later, she said, “It’s fine. A portion of the toxins has been flushed out. Try to see if you can

make a sound.”

Nathalie stared at her in shock, unable to believe it was happening this fast. She immediately tried to speak.

However, the sound that came out was still horrifically raspy, as if her vocal cords were being shredded. She couldn’t form a single coherent word.

Nathalie’s expression went blank, a visible wave of crushing disappointment washing over her eyes.

She still couldn’t talk…
