Chapter 777
Chapter 777
Hearing his words, Damaris’s heart instantly skipped a terrified beat.
What was he implying?
He was jealous of a kitten?
Was he completely out of his mind?
Lawrence’s face remained eerily blank, but his next words sert ice shooting straight through her veins. “I should just get rid of you. Then my baby would only be able to look at me. Actually, no. I should just kill you. That way, my baby will never think about you ever again.”
“No!”
Damaris’s eyes flew wide in sheer panic. She grabbed his arm, staring at him with desperate, pleading eyes. “Don’t you dare hurt her!”
The kitten was completely innocent. If he killed it just to spite her, the guilt would eat her alive.
Lawrence turned back to her, slipping effortlessly into that agonizingly pitiful stare. “Look at you. How long have you known that thing? Less than an hour, and you already care about it this much. I love you with everything I have. We’ve been together all this time, and you still refuse to spare me a single smile. Tell me, baby, how could I not be jealous?”
Listening to his twisted, deranged logic, Damaris took a deep, shuddering breath. “What do you want me to do?”
Lawrence rested his head back against her chest. “Pet me. Exactly like
you pet her.”
Defeated, Damaris reached out and began stroking his hair, her movements steady and gentle.
A wave of profound satisfaction washed over Lawrence’s face. She was finally willing to touch him.

After a few minutes, the simple affection was no longer enough. He pushed his tuck. “Kiss me.”
Swallowing her bite, Damaris leaned down and pressed a stiff, perfunctory kiss to his cheek.
Even a forced gesture was enough to thrill-lawrence. He suddenly found the kitten wandering around the room a lot less offensive.
Right on cue, his cell phone started vibrating. He pulled it out, glancing at the caller ID before looking up at her. “Baby, I have to take this. You and Mimi keep playing.”
He planted one last heavy kiss on her lips, then stood up and walked out of the room.
Damaris exhaled a massive breath of relief. She slipped off the couch, scooping the kitten into her arms, and retreated to the designated pet
room. The second the door clicked shut behind her, she stroked Mimi’s soft fur, her eyes brimming with a bone-deep, unshakable sorrow.
What was she supposed to do?
She just wanted to go home so badly.
Right now, this tiny kitten was the only thing keeping her sane. She held onto Mimi like a drowning woman clinging to a life raft.
