The Unwavering Heart That Broke novel Chapter 88

Lance shifted, taking some of his weight off her.

Nathalie sucked in a breath, then shoved him hard. “Get out.”

Lance just flopped onto his side on the sofa, his eyes bright and a little unfocused from the alcohol. “No way. It took a lot to get in here.”

Nathalie actually let out a laugh, she was so furious. Seriously? He’d broken in with a locksmith in the middle of the night and now he was acting like he was the victim?

She wanted to drag him out herself, but any closer and he’d probably end up pinning her down again.

Icy, she snapped, “Fine. Stay there for all I care.”

She marched straight to the bedroom. Lance tried to follow, but she slammed the door behind her and locked it.

His nose nearly got caught in the door.

Standing in front of the wood, he called, “Nathalie, let me in.”

Nathalie put in her earplugs and ignored him completely.

Lance lingered in the hallway for a while, staring at the bedroom door. When it was clear Nathalie wasn’t going to let him in, he drooped back to the living room. Tossing himself on the sofa, he grabbed Nathalie’s favorite pillow and hugged it to his chest.

It smelled like her, and when he buried his face in it, breathing her in, he drifted off almost instantly.

The next morning came quickly.

Nathalie came out of the bedroom and spotted him curled up on the couch.

He was tall, all long legs and arms, but somehow managed to fold himself up so small he looked almost… sad?

She glanced away, face stony.

Like she was actually supposed to feel sorry for him. Not happening.

Lance didn’t wake up until nearly nine. His head was pounding from last night’s drinks, so he pressed his fingers to his temples and tried to remember everything. Not that he’d forget anyway.

He looked around. Nathalie was nowhere to be seen.

He let out a long breath, got up, and left.

Saturday.

Nathalie arrived at the cafe, right on time. The girl was already waiting.

“Where are you?” His voice grew even softer, almost hopeful.

He must’ve thought she was calling to make up.

Nathalie told him the name of the cafe. At once he said, “I’ll be there soon. Wait for me.”

“Okay.”

She hung up and met Maggie’s curious gaze.

“Is there something you want to ask?” Nathalie took a sip of coffee, not letting any emotion show.

Maggie nodded slowly. “I’ve heard some things… People say Lance and Felice are close, maybe too close. Is that why you’re divorcing him?”

Nathalie held her gaze. “It’s not just gossip. It’s true.”

Maggie froze, not expecting that. “Really?”

Nathalie’s face didn’t change. “Do you regret it now?”
