Lance hung up without another word, rolled over, and pinned Nathalie beneath him.
“I could just strangle you right now,” he growled, his eyes blazing.
Nathalie blinked, surprised he’d found out about the wedding ring so fast, especially in a moment like this. Still, her eyes stayed calm, showing no trace of guilt. “The marriage is pretty much over, so what’s the point of the ring? It still has value, so of course I sold it.”
“That was the ring I gave you. How could you just sell it without asking me?” Lance’s voice was cold and heavy.
“If you gave it to me, it’s mine to do what I want with,” Nathalie replied, matching his stare. “It’s just a ring. Why are you so mad? It’s not like I threw out your kid.”
She gave a short, dry laugh. “Oh, right. You can’t even have kids. Forgot you took care of that.”
The room felt even darker.
They stared at each other, neither one budging.
There was clear mockery and coldness in her gaze.
His was pure rage.
That ring wasn’t just jewelry. It carried eight years of memories…the entire history of their relationship. And now, she had just sold it like it meant nothing.
Without another word, Lance pushed himself up and walked out of the bedroom.
As he tossed the blanket aside, a chill swept over Nathalie. She shivered at the sudden cold, pulling the covers back over herself, hugging them close, trying to keep the leftover warmth a little longer.
It didn’t work.
With him gone, the warmth faded fast.
She stared at the darkness creeping across the sky outside the window, thinking that if he had ever given her this place, she would sell it too. She wanted nothing of his lingering in her world. The thought of erasing him completely felt almost peaceful.
Her mom paused, then asked, “Doesn’t any of this hurt you?”
Nathalie lowered her gaze, silent for a couple of seconds. “I just want the divorce. That’s all.”
There was a soft sigh on the other end. “Things are how they are. No point looking back, you can only move forward. By the way, Lance won’t let Felice leave that company, so I found a few other voiceover jobs you can try. I’ll email you the details. Take a look, and if you’re interested, give them a shot.”
This was compensation, plain and simple.
Nathalie gave a tired smile. “Thanks, Mom. I appreciate it.”
“I still care about you a lot,” her mom said gently. “It’s just a shame you and Lance weren’t meant to work out. It’s late. Try to get some rest.”
Nathalie muttered a quiet goodbye and ended the call.
A silent, ironic smile lingered on her lips.
