Astra’s POV
Lady Mora’s flare-up shook the entire Zane Pack for half the night.
Only when Agnes called in an elder healer from the alliance did they manage to stabilize her condition—barely.
Before leaving, the old healer grabbed Kieran’s paw and whispered low,
“I treated Lady Mora years ago, but my skills can only do so much. Across the Northwest, only Doctor Danelle’s herbs can truly heal her old wounds. Right now, I’m just keeping the symptoms at bay. Thanks to the good health built by a year of Danelle’s treatment. But if she falls ill again, I won’t be able to help.”
Kieran saw the healer out, then stormed straight toward my room.
I heard every step.
I was unlocking the seals on my dagger, letting my senses sharpen again.
His claws scraped the floor with furious force, each step thunderous like a brewing storm.
He kicked open the tent flap while I was polishing the moonlight silver blade. The firelight caught the steel, casting a cold, sharp glow.
He loomed over me, tall and furious, practically swallowing me in shadow.
“Tomorrow, bring Doctor Danelle here. Or—”
I looked up coolly. “Or what?”
His claws pressed against my throat, breath hot and sharp with bloodlust.
“I’ll follow the Pack‘s law, and break our bond.”
I met his gaze steadily. “Break our bond?”
He grit his teeth. “You were right that day! According to the code, disrespecting elders is grounds to be expelled from Pack Zane.”
A slow smile curled on my lips as I watched his claw tremble with rage.
“So you finally said it. Good. I’ll be waiting for your bond-breaking mark.”
Kieran wasn’t expecting my reaction. He paused, then snarled,
“You should know that if I break the bond, the Hale silver mines and the obsidian forest lands will all belong to House Zane.”
“Fine,” I said, voice steady. “Tomorrow, bring the alliance elders and the goddess who witnessed our bond. In front of everyone, you brand the bond broken—and I, Astra Hale, will hand over everything on the spot.”
His finger nearly touched my nose.
Still, a weight settled in my chest. The alliance elder’s seal was late—had Kellen really changed his mind?
Did my father’s and brothers’ battle honors mean less than Zane’s new victories?
I pushed the doubts aside. Those silver mine contracts and land deeds had long ago been hidden away by my kin in secret caves deep in the Black Forest.
The only things Kieran could take were the furs and silverware visible in this tent.
The real treasures? Not a chance.
Sure, there’d be losses, but nothing crippling.
If Kieran really follows through, don’t say I didn’t warn him about my ruthlessness.
Bekkie spat fiercely,
“It’s about time! They don’t care about old days, so why should we?”
She shook her head.
“And you said you’d still call Doctor Danelle to help. Ha! Not worth it.”
