The Wife He Dumped, The Queen She Returned As novel Chapter 10

"But the other guest specifically said you were her daughter. Isn't it normal for a daughter to pay for her mother? Please don't make this difficult for me..."

Chloe had reached her absolute limit. "That is your problem. If she refused to pay, call the cops!"

Seeing her hold her ground, the waiter hesitated. But then, Preston's smooth voice drifted over from behind.

"Put it on my card."

"The total for the VIP room is five thousand dollars. Thank you, sir..."

The waiter happily reached for the black card, but Chloe snatched it out of the air.

"No!"

She glared at Preston. "This is between the restaurant and them. It has absolutely nothing to do with you. You have no reason to pay!"

Preston rubbed the bridge of his nose, looking exhausted. "Chloe, don't let something this petty ruin your night."

Chloe clutched the heavy metal card. "You think this is just some petty issue?"

A crowd had started to gather. For the first time, a flash of genuine annoyance crossed Preston's face.

"I know you're trying to prove a point about your boundaries. But throwing a little money at a problem to make it go away is just a minor inconvenience to me."

Chloe stared at him, the pain in her chest so intense she couldn't breathe.

Even if he acted like he didn't care, it was still an inconvenience to him.

Was that what she was to him, too? Just another problem to throw money at?

She had told him over and over again from the start that she refused to use saving his life as leverage. She never wanted his pity or charity!

If he only proposed to her because he felt obligated to take care of her ruined life, she never would have said yes!

Suddenly, Jenna's obnoxious voice rang out from the crowd.

"Oh my God, when has Preston ever been humiliated like this in public? His wife is completely unhinged!"

Mason, playing the ultimate insider, sneered loudly. "I have no idea why she's acting so high and mighty. Who knows how many millions she and her trashy relatives have drained from Preston's accounts..."

Backed by wealthy patrons, the waiter suddenly grew bold.
