The Wife He Dumped, The Queen She Returned As novel Chapter 103

The agonizing pain in her heart flared for only a moment before her vision plunged entirely into darkness.

When Chloe opened her eyes again, she found herself lying in a hospital bed.

The maid guarding her side immediately stood up in excitement upon seeing her awake. "Mrs. Hayes, thank goodness! You're finally awake! How are you feeling?"

As her consciousness returned, a tearing, agonizing pain surged through her entire body.

She couldn't help but furrow her brows.

Seeing this, the maid quickly went out and called the doctor. The doctor performed another comprehensive and detailed examination on Chloe.

"Ms. Reed, it's fortunate that you grabbed the stone balustrade midway and stopped yourself from tumbling further down. These are just superficial injuries. Your internal organs are unharmed."

He continued with his instructions. "You just need to get plenty of rest these next few days, and you'll recover quickly."

"Okay. Thank you, doctor."

Chloe gave a soft reply, raising her hand to feel around for her phone.

The maid quickly grabbed it from the nightstand and handed it to her. "Mrs. Hayes, someone called you several times last night. It looked urgent..."

Remembering Preston's icy expression when he saw the caller ID last night, she couldn't help but shiver:

"It's just that, without your permission, I didn't feel it was appropriate to answer on your behalf..."

"It's fine."

Chloe said flatly. She lit up the screen and saw that the missed calls were all from Quentin Shaw.

Her heart tightened, and she immediately called him back.

The line connected quickly.

"Hey, Quentin. I'm sorry, something came up last night, so I couldn't answer your calls."

"It's alright."

Whether it was an illusion or not, Quentin's voice sounded a bit colder than usual:

"When you didn't come back all night, I called a few more times. As long as you're safe, that's what matters."

"I've already fed Yuri. The little guy has been lethargic, probably missing you." His tone was calm, but carried a hint of subtle inquiry. "Are you coming back today?"

A mocking sneer surfaced in Chloe's eyes.

Her IV had just finished, and a nurse came in to remove the needle. Without another word, Chloe propped herself up and got ready to leave.

Right then, the door to the hospital room was pushed open from the outside.

Preston walked in. "Where are you going?"

He stepped forward quickly, reaching out to support her. "You haven't recovered yet. Be good and get back in bed."

That gentle voice and concerned expression only made Chloe feel incredibly disgusted and sick to her stomach.

She shoved him away violently, as if she had touched a live wire.

Preston froze, confusion floating in his eyes. "What's wrong? Are you uncomfortable somewhere?"

Chloe didn't give him another look. She grabbed her bag and headed for the door.

The maid hastily stepped in to smooth things over. "Mr. Hayes, Mrs. Hayes has plans to meet someone. It seems urgent..."

It was meant to be a helpful explanation, but it made Preston's face instantly darken.
