"You're out of your mind! You can't move right now!" Percival tried to stop him, trembling with rage. "You risked your life to protect her, but she doesn't even appreciate it! She hasn't stepped foot in here to see you once. Meanwhile, Jenna has been so worried she hasn't eaten or slept!"
Hearing this, Preston said nothing, but his eyes grew darker. He stumbled forward and staggered out of the room.
At the end of the hallway, the elevator doors were slowly sliding shut. He caught sight of Chloe standing inside.
"Chloe!"
He rushed forward, but the heavy metal doors closed mercilessly, severing their line of sight.
Preston stopped in his tracks, staring blankly at the elevator.
From behind, Percival's cold, mocking voice rang out.
"Look at that. Haven't you realized what kind of person she truly is yet?"
Preston felt as if an invisible hand was squeezing his heart. His gaze turned somber and menacing.
"What did you do to Chloe?"
It hadn't been long ago that she was willing to throw her own life away to save him.
Trapped in the mangled car, with heavy eyelids and fading consciousness, he had faintly heard her voice.
He had heard her screaming his name, over and over.
He could even picture the tears streaming down her face.
Percival was so angry he could barely speak. "What could we have possibly done to her?!"
Preston muttered, "If you hadn't done something completely out of line, she would never act like this..."
It wasn't until Chloe arrived back at Oceanview Heights that she saw the WhatsApp message Quentin Shaw had sent several hours earlier.
"Are you home?"
"I'm going out of town for a business trip this week. I was going to say goodbye, but it's fine."
She replied, "Okay. Have a safe trip."
The chat window showed "typing..." for a long time, but no further message came through.
After feeding Yuri, Chloe fell into a deep, exhausted sleep.
Early the next morning, the shrill ringing of her phone jolted her awake.
It was the Sterling Bay Police Department.
