Inside the hospital room, Preston tapped his screen, playing a specific video on a continuous loop. The glow of the screen flickered in his eyes, casting shifting shadows.
When Chloe walked in, she immediately heard her own frantic voice echoing around the room.
She fell silent.
Her face darkened instantly. She marched over and snatched the phone from his hands.
"Preston, are you out of your mind? How can you sit there smiling after something like that happened?"
Preston didn't look angry at all. Instead, he gazed at her with amusement. "Chloe, I'm just touched."
"Oh, you're upset about the online comments? Don't worry, I already had my team scrub the negative press. I promise you won't see a single word you dislike."
Chloe scoffed, finding it ridiculous. "Mr. Hayes, you publicly confirmed those rumors yourself. Is there really any point in trying to silence people now?"
"Besides, I'm not bored enough to get mad over irrelevant nonsense!"
Preston looked up, studying her with immense interest. The smirk in his eyes deepened. "It's been so long, yet you're still jealous?"
"You never used to care about what outsiders thought. Their opinions don't matter. As long as we know the truth, that's what counts. Chloe, you are the only Mrs. Hayes."
Chloe laughed in sheer disbelief at his audacity.
"A Mrs. Hayes who was dragged online and branded a homewrecker by millions? Preston, listen to yourself. Don't you find that hilarious?"
"Chloe..."
She refused to engage any further. "Enough. We have nothing more to say to each other! Where are the police?"
Realizing she was shutting down, Preston dropped the subject and made a quick phone call.
Within minutes, two police officers hurried into the room.
"Mr. Hayes, the vehicle involved was an unregistered, scrapped van. The driver abandoned it right before the explosion. Thankfully, security cameras caught his escape route. We've zeroed in on his general direction and are confident we'll make an arrest soon."
"Mhm." Preston replied casually. His voice was level, yet his sharp profile exuded a suffocating, predatory aura that sent chills down the spine.
"Two days should be enough, right? The second you catch him, I want to be the first to know."
"Understood, Mr. Hayes. We will expedite the search and report to you immediately."
