Jenna took in the chaotic scene, her heart pounding in her chest.
She walked toward Preston. "Preston..."
The hostility in Preston's face ebbed slightly at the sight of her. "Jenna, you need to leave."
Jenna grabbed his arm, looking visibly distressed. "No!"
"How can I just stand by and watch you ruin everything? You're going to regret this!"
She shot a red-eyed glare at Chloe, pointing an accusing finger. "Chloe, are you seriously just standing there? Why aren't you stopping him?"
"I know you love the ego boost of having a man fight your battles, but did you even stop to think about the massive mess this will cause for him?"
"Penelope is still in college. She's young and immature. Sure, she acted impulsively, but who doesn't make mistakes? Couldn't you think about how this affects Preston before you blow things out of proportion?"
"Rowan Industries and Vantage Corp are partners! If things go south, no one wins! Chloe, you are unbelievably selfish!"
Jenna worked herself up into tears as she spoke.
Preston held her arm. "This has nothing to do with Chloe. Calm down."
Jenna fiercely wiped her tears away, her chest heaving. "I just can't stand seeing you in trouble. I can't let Vantage take a hit like this..."
Seeing her step in, the Rowans latched onto her like a lifeline, swarming around her.
"Miss Cameron, thank you so much for speaking up for us! It's so rare to find a girl as kind-hearted and considerate as you these days!"
Tears welled up in Penelope's eyes as she laid it on thick. "Jenna, you're the best..."
"Penelope!" Terrified she was about to spill too much, Jenna cut her off sharply.
"Just apologize to Chloe one more time, and we'll put an end to this."
She turned to Preston, lowering her voice.
"Preston, Penelope is like a little sister to me. She only acted out because she misunderstood the situation between Chloe and Quentin."
"At the end of the day, this whole mess started because Chloe doesn't respect boundaries and got too close to Quentin. She needs to learn her lesson, and since she didn't get hurt, can't we just let this go?"
Mr. Rowan seized the moment. Fighting through his pain, he practically groveled.
"Mr. Hayes, we were completely out of line. I offer you my deepest apologies once again!"
