Chloe finally looked up, meeting Preston's gaze.
Preston stared back, waiting for her to speak.
But Chloe didn't say a single word.
"Sir, when I say I'm not selling, I mean I'm not—"
Rhonda, furious on Chloe's behalf, was about to reject him outright when Chloe stopped her.
"It's fine. Just sell it to him."
"After all, it's not every day you run into someone with more money than brains. Might as well cash in."
Preston paused, then let out a dry, infuriated scoff before pulling out his black card.
"Ring it up."
Jenna panicked, rushing over and feigning magnanimity.
"Preston, just let it go. If Chloe likes it so much, I'll just give it to her. I don't want her throwing another fit..."
Preston handed the card to the cashier, his tone clipped.
"You like it too, don't you."
Mason and Wyatt immediately started hooting and cheering.
"Jenna, you're clearly way more important to Preston!"
"Exactly! You're always his number one priority. Stop being so considerate; some people don't know how to appreciate it!"
Belle clenched her fists in fury, throwing a worried glance at Chloe.
"Chloe..."
But Chloe's expression remained entirely placid, as though the man standing in front of her was nothing more than an irrelevant stranger.
Preston was tracking her expression closely as well, the suffocating tension in his chest growing more intense by the second.
Since when was she this generous?
He wanted to see how long she could keep up this act!
Watching Preston swipe his card for double the price made Jenna's heart bleed.
She shot Chloe a vicious glare. "Chloe, Preston came out shopping with me for official business. This is for Vantage Corp!"
"Stop acting out and constantly imagining enemies everywhere! I'll let it slide this time, but don't let it happen again!"
With that, she dragged Preston away, leaving without looking back.
"What is wrong with those people?" Belle spat.
She turned to Chloe. "Are you okay?"
Chloe gave a small smile. "I'm perfectly fine."
Her cool indifference made it painfully obvious that she had given up on Preston entirely.
Belle felt a sharp pang of sympathy. She knew better than anyone how deeply Chloe had loved him.
How much heartbreak had she endured to reach this state of total emotional numbness, refusing to harbor even a single shred of hope?
"Chloe..." Belle wrapped her arms around her friend, her voice muffled. "I support your divorce one hundred percent! Once we move abroad, let's never come back. Let that cheating bastard and his pathetic sidepiece rot together while you live your best life!"
Chloe paused for a second before gently patting Belle's back.
