Chloe smiled. "It's just an astrolabe. How expensive could it really be? As long as you like it, it was worth the effort."
Mr. Goodwin nodded repeatedly, unable to tear his hands away from it. "I love it, of course I do..."
The bystanders who witnessed this couldn't help but scoff:
"Tsk, tsk. For all the defending he does for her, you'd think she'd bring an actual grand gift. A cheap astrolabe for a sixtieth birthday? I don't know how she has the nerve to even hand it over. How embarrassing!"
"It's not like you don't know how broke her family is. She was probably sold off to some old guy for a quick buck by her mom before she even finished college. It's a miracle she could even afford that piece of junk."
"Exactly. It's been over a decade since graduation, and she still showed up in a taxi. She can't even afford her own car. Mr. Goodwin definitely backed the wrong horse, and he's probably regretting it right now!"
Hearing their vicious whispers, Belle was utterly exasperated.
If Chloe hadn't strictly forbidden her from mentioning the price, she would have shouted it out just to watch them choke on it!
Just then, someone in the crowd pointed toward the street.
"Hey! Here they come! Is that Jenna's car?"
"Duh, obviously! It's a Maserati! Who else could afford that?"
A dozen people instantly swarmed forward like bees to honey, plastering eager smiles on their faces as they waited for the occupants to step out.
The first to push open the door and step out was a man.
Everyone stared at him in awe, immediately struck by his exceptionally distinguished aura.
"Is that her husband? He's so handsome!"
"Her husband is Mr. Hayes! Haven't you heard of Vantage Tech?"
Sure enough, a second later, the man walked around to the back and pulled open the passenger door.
Jenna stepped out wearing a ridiculously expensive designer coat, the massive logo practically screaming its exorbitant price tag.
The woman, who used to be her loyal follower back in the day, froze in sheer embarrassment.
"I'm sorry, I didn't know..."
Jenna rolled her eyes. "Of course you don't. Just keep your hands to yourself!"
Watching the entire spectacle from a short distance away, Belle clicked her tongue.
"How the hell did she manage to claw her way up? What does Preston even see in her? Aside from him being blind or possessed by a demon, I literally cannot think of a single reason..."
"But on the bright side, this is the perfect chance for me to gather some intel!"
As she spoke, she perked up and happily trotted over to the woman who had just been publicly humiliated.
Completely oblivious to Belle's maneuvering, Jenna locked her eyes on Mr. Goodwin and marched straight toward him.
"Mr. Goodwin, happy birthday! I got you a present, and I guarantee you're going to love it!"
