The Wife He Dumped, The Queen She Returned As novel Chapter 22

Chloe remembered the cold, blaming look he had given her at the banquet. She had fully expected him to defend Jenna Cameron again. Stunned by his apology, a lump formed in her throat despite her best efforts to stay detached.

Preston continued, his voice steady. "Those men are already in jail. I swear, I will never let anyone hurt you again."

Chloe pushed him away with a bitter laugh. "And what about Jenna?"

"If you don't like her, I'll make sure she disappears from your life forever," Preston replied.

As he spoke, he pulled her back into his arms, burying his face in the crook of her neck.

"Chloe, the Synergy Summit is over. I booked our flights for tomorrow. I'm taking you to an island to recover..."

"I've been too busy with work lately to properly spend time with you. This time, it will just be the two of us..."

His embrace was warm, carrying that familiar, clean scent she used to love, making it so dangerously easy to sink into.

But Chloe's body remained rigid. After a long silence, she lowered her eyes.

"Okay."

She genuinely needed a chance to have a real conversation with him.

For an entire day and night, Preston stayed right by her side, never leaving for a second.

Ever since Vantage Group skyrocketed to success, he hadn't spent this much time at home.

Usually, it was her waiting in the empty house for him to return.

Preston personally packed her bags, asking casually,

"Why didn't you like the resort island I picked? Why insist on going to a totally deserted one?"

Chloe froze.

As she zoned out, Preston wrapped his arms around her waist, pressing a gentle kiss to her cheek with a soft smile.

"Could it be that you just want me all to yourself, with no one around to bother us?"

Snapping back to reality, Chloe pushed his head away. "Or maybe it's just a convenient place to dump a body," she said coldly.

Preston's smile only deepened. "Alright. How does Ms. Reed plan to do it? I'll cooperate."

Chloe stopped joking. Her eyelashes fluttered as she looked him dead in the eye.
