Right at that moment, Preston's phone rang. Despite his barely contained rage, he answered it instantly.
Jenna's frail voice drifted through the speaker. "Preston! Where are you? I'm so scared... I dreamt about that man again..."
Preston's tone softened in a heartbeat. "Don't be scared. I'm coming over right now."
It was as if all the strength had been siphoned from Chloe's body.
She had honestly believed they could at least have an amicable divorce. She never expected him to be so fiercely obstinate.
She truly didn't understand. If he didn't love her, why refuse to sign the papers?
Finally, she even brought up her hearing loss as a desperate plea.
"Preston, if you truly want to make amends, just let me go. Please?"
Preston had already thrown on his coat and was striding toward the entryway.
Hearing this, he simply tossed a cold remark over his shoulder. "Chloe, stop this nonsense. It's exactly because I have to be responsible for you that I won't divorce you. How would you even survive without me?"
With that, the front door slammed shut.
Swallowed by the thick of the night, Preston hurried off to be by another woman's side.
Chloe stood alone in the empty room for a very long time.
Eventually, she bent down and picked up the scattered documents from the floor, one by one.
Thankfully, Preston hadn't noticed them earlier.
Given how sharp he was, he would have easily figured out she was planning to move out.
Tonight, she had witnessed the terrifying depths of his possessiveness. If he found out, he would use every ruthless tactic at his disposal to stop her!
But his refusal meant nothing. Once she made up her mind, no one could stand in her way.
Whether it was because she had slept too much during the day or because she was too wired with anticipation, Chloe tossed and turned all night.
Her heart hammered relentlessly against her ribs.
It had been a long time since she had felt such a potent mix of excitement and nerves.
Finally giving up on sleep, she sat up and carefully flipped through the documents Quentin Shaw had prepared for her.
She realized he had put an incredible amount of effort into it. Every obscure technical term had a detailed, meticulous annotation next to it. He must have prepared this well in advance.
