The Wife He Dumped, The Queen She Returned As novel Chapter 49

"Nexus Global? Are you sure?"

Quentin raised an eyebrow, his tone skeptical.

The voice on the other end was absolute. "Of course! The whole industry is buzzing about it! Word on the street is that Mr. Hayes's wife pulled the strings. Vantage Corp is going to reap massive benefits from this! Man, Caroline has been off the grid for years. That Mrs. Hayes must be something else to drag her out of hiding."

"Mrs. Hayes?"

Quentin cut him off. His face remained completely neutral, but the temperature of his voice plummeted.

"Yeah! Mr. Hayes was right there at the summit the other day. Tons of people saw it. But hey, even though you might lose this project, it's totally worth it since you finally get to see—"

The bubbly voice abruptly cut out.

Quentin ended the call, his eyes instinctively drifting toward Chloe.

Chloe looked entirely unbothered, her eyes downcast with zero reaction.

"It's only been three years, and someone is already bold enough to impersonate you and brag about it to the whole world," Quentin said. "Quite the courage."

Chloe let out a self-deprecating laugh. "Well, I have been hiding for three years."

"Do you want me to handle this for you?" Quentin asked.

"No need," Chloe replied. "I'm actually quite curious to see exactly which 'Caroline' this 'Mrs. Hayes' managed to hire for Nexus Global."

After her accident three years ago, Preston had always been so gentle and radiant when he was with her. Yet, more than once, she had caught him in the empty stairwell, looking utterly devastated.

She could feel the crushing weight of his pain. Not wanting to add to his burden, she had hidden her true credentials, casually mentioning that she just did some translation work.

She never imagined that her quiet consideration would become the exact reason he and his family looked down on her three years later!

The cruel irony of it made her chest tight, and despite her best efforts to maintain composure, a sharp ache pierced her heart.

Quentin seemed to see right through her defenses.
