Chloe watched Jenna's arrogant display—acting as if she wanted the whole world to know she had latched onto Caroline Monet—and found it utterly ridiculous.
When Jenna saw that Chloe wasn't the least bit humiliated and was instead offering a mocking smile, she snapped.
"What are you staring at?" she yelled at the staff. "Kick her out! If she offends Caroline, can you bear the consequences?"
Though the staff member didn't recognize Jenna, he didn't dare offend Preston Hayes. He immediately turned to Chloe. "Miss, please leave at once."
The commotion drew a crowd. Several people poked their heads in, shooting Chloe weird looks.
Inside the lounge, Percival Hayes's face darkened. Unwilling to spare Chloe another glance, he spat, "What a disgrace."
The tension in the room thickened to an unbearable degree.
Preston looked at Chloe and finally spoke up. "She's with me—"
Chloe cut him off, speaking to the staff member at the exact same time. "Are you absolutely certain that no one is allowed backstage unless they are a summit speaker or staff?"
"Of course!" the staff member replied.
Chloe offered a faint smile. She pulled out her own ID badge and handed it over.
The man glanced at it and instantly looked apologetic. "I'm so sorry, there's been a misunderstanding."
"How is that possible? What could a deaf woman possibly do here?"
In pure disbelief, Jenna snatched the badge right out of his hand.
But there it was—Chloe's name and photo, printed clear as day.
Reading the word "Assistant," Jenna erupted into a fit of laughter. "Oh my god, Chloe, you came here to be an assistant? Don't tell me you're trying to prove yourself just because of what Percival said last time?"
