Everyone's heads snapped toward the exit.
Hearing the uproar, Jenna panicked. She sprinted over just in time to watch the Masked Woman barrel blindly down the emergency stairwell, vanishing without a trace.
No matter how dense she was, she finally realized something was horribly wrong.
Was it possible that the woman she invited... really was an imposter?
Mr. Lawson's furious roar rang in her ears. "Mr. Hayes, look at what your wife has done! This is far from over! I will pursue full legal and professional recourse!"
Jenna broke down in terrified sobs. "What's going on... The woman I invited was Caroline, how could this happen..."
She had added the woman's WhatsApp years ago when she was studying abroad. Her posts made her seem like a top-tier interpreter, and a quick online search convinced Jenna of her elite status. To convince the legend to step out of retirement, Jenna had dropped hundreds of thousands of dollars on her appearance fee!
Preston reached out and stabilized the trembling woman. Shockingly, he didn't show an ounce of blame. Instead, he soothed her with agonizing gentleness. "It's okay. Try not to panic. I know you were just scammed."
Clinging to him like a lifeline, Jenna buried herself in his chest and refused to let go. "Preston! I swear I don't know why this happened... I didn't mean to! I'm so sorry, did I cause trouble for you?"
Mr. Lawson was entirely fed up with her theatrics. "What good is crying going to do now? Did you even verify her translation credentials? Did you background check her at all? At this rate, anyone off the street could claim to be Caroline Monet!"
"I didn't know it was that complicated!" Jenna cried. "You didn't warn me! How is blaming me going to fix anything? I paid her so much money..."
She had even used her own money just to prove she could help Preston independently! Realizing her cash was gone, she felt like her entire world was collapsing.
Enraged by her total lack of accountability, Mr. Lawson didn't even care about respecting Preston anymore.
At the critical moment, Preston shielded Jenna behind him once again.
"Mr. Hayes, Vantage and Nexus Global were set to sign a massive contract after the summit, but it completely fell through because of your wife's mistake! Is this true?"
"Mr. Shaw explicitly warned you before the speech began. Why did you ignore him and refuse to double-check her identity?"
"Facing such catastrophic financial losses, do you regret doubting Mr. Shaw?"
Jenna's heart hammered frantically against her ribs. She looked up at Preston timidly, her voice shaking. "Preston... I'm sorry. I ruined everything again."
But under the blinding flash of dozens of cameras, Preston simply raised a hand and wiped away her tears. His voice was devastatingly gentle. "It's okay. You didn't mean to. Just learn from this mistake."
He lifted his gaze, sweeping over the mob of reporters. His tone was perfectly steady and undeniably firm. "Jenna is not the one at fault here. The con artist who impersonated Caroline Monet is. As for regret? The entire point of working hard is to build a safety net for the people you want to protect."
The moment the words left his mouth, the entire hall erupted into pandemonium.
