The Wife He Dumped, The Queen She Returned As novel Chapter 86

But before he even reached his front door, Mr. Lynch froze. Looking at his house, he thought he had walked onto the wrong property. The exterior was completely renovated. Inside, brand-new appliances gleamed in the sunlight.

"Is... is this my house?"

Preston stepped out of the front door, offering a warm smile. "Mr. Lynch, take a look around. If you need anything else, just say the word."

"Preston, you shouldn't have spent all this money. An old man like me doesn't need all this luxury..." Mr. Lynch scolded gently, but he was moved to tears.

Preston walked over and supported the old man's arm. "Chloe bought all of this for you. I just helped pick it out."

Chloe stared at him, her chest tight with conflicting emotions. She grabbed his arm and dragged him outside. Preston smiled, letting her pull him along. "What's wrong?" he asked, looking down at her fondly.

"What's wrong?" Chloe felt her blood boiling. "What exactly are you trying to do, Preston?"

His smile vanished, replaced by a flash of genuine confusion. "What do you mean?"

"What if those thugs come back for revenge? Is it safe for Mr. Lynch to live here alone? And the house, was I supposed to let him live in a vandalized wreck of a home he's spent his whole life in?"

He paused, swallowing his frustration, and softened his tone. "Chloe, stop being so angry. If I did something wrong, just tell me."

Chloe forced herself to breathe. She hated this feeling of spiraling out of control. "You didn't do anything wrong, Preston. But you aren't the one who should be doing this. Do you understand that?" She pulled out her phone. "How much did you spend? I'm wiring you the money right now."

Her icy, transactional gaze felt like a knife in his chest. He had personally overseen the security detail. He had handpicked every single appliance. He did it all hoping to see a smile on her face. To have her throw a bucket of ice water over his efforts sparked a flare of genuine anger.
