Alexander neither confirmed nor denied it. He simply picked up the bottle, refilled Gian's glass, and said flatly, "Love doesn't just disappear."
Those five words carried a heavy weight.
Gian let out a short, cynical laugh and shook his head. "I never realized how good you are at hiding it. All these years, you've been protecting her from the shadows, never letting her know."
Alexander looked up, his eyes filled with a complex emotion. "I don't want to disturb her life. She's doing well now. With you taking care of her, I can rest easy."
"Rest easy?" Gian raised an eyebrow. "If you could really rest easy, you wouldn't have specially prepared that cranberry orange tart and honey lavender latte today. You wouldn't have gone out of your way to ask about her health after the meeting, and you certainly wouldn't have been staring at her all night. Alexander, you care so damn much, but you insist on acting cold and indifferent. Aren't you tired?"
Alexander fell silent. He downed his glass in one gulp. The burn of the liquor seared his throat, but it also sharpened his senses. He knew Gian was right. For years, he had been living in a state of torment and struggle, wanting to get closer to Danielle but terrified of hurting her.
Instead of arguing, he looked at Gian and said sincerely, "Thank you."
Gian was taken aback, clearly not expecting a sudden expression of gratitude. "Thank me for what?"
"Thank you for taking care of Danielle all these years. Thank you for helping and supporting her when she was at her lowest." Alexander's voice was deep and raspy, with an almost imperceptible catch. "If it weren't for you, she might not have made it this far. I know you're sincere about her, and I'm grateful for that."
His words left Gian utterly speechless. He had always expected hostility from Alexander; after all, they were rivals for her affection. He never imagined he would say something like this.
Looking at the sincerity and exhaustion in Alexander's eyes, Gian's own animosity began to fade, replaced by a complicated mix of feelings. He knew that too many misunderstandings and missed chances lay between Alexander and Danielle, things he couldn't easily interfere with.
The two of them walked slowly toward the parking lot. Danielle chattered on, talking about funny things from work and Niki's latest antics, her face lit with a brilliant smile.
From the shadows of a nearby tree, Alexander stood motionless, watching their figures. The dim yellow streetlights stretched their shadows long across the pavement. Walking side-by-side, they looked perfectly matched.
He watched the radiant smile on Danielle's face—a genuine, heartfelt joy he hadn't seen in a long time. The oppressive weight in his chest swelled, as if something was squeezing his heart so tight he could barely breathe.
So this is what it felt like to watch the person you love walk away.
Did she feel this same heart-wrenching pain whenever she looked at him?

I hope daniele will have no end game with alexander since whatever the reason is, he only give her too much grievencess. I hope there will be another male character with stronger present than alexander to have the end game with daniele. Hated that in the name of love or protection alexander can treat another woman better, not just once, but with this new lorie girl... Oh my blood pressure getting higher cause by the new plot :(...

OMG! Chapters 451-462 had me on edge. I wish we could also read Alexander's POV. I swear I want to punch him and Millie. This story is kind of a push and pull. The main character will win some, then lose some. Hope the writer gives Danielle a big win....
