How could she not see through him? Jake wasn't genuinely hoping she and Alexander would reconcile. He just wanted to use her as a mouthpiece to persuade Alexander to drop the investigation into the past and abandon his fight against Harold.

He was afraid Alexander’s actions would implicate the Davidson family, afraid that the empire they had built over the years would be destroyed. So he had come up with this plan, trying to use love and family to tie Alexander’s hands and force him to compromise.

“You make it sound so simple, Mr. Davidson,” Danielle’s tone grew colder, her gaze sharpening on Jake. “If you believe that ‘what’s past is past,’ then why haven’t you retired to enjoy your golden years? Why are you still running around in political circles, fighting for the Davidson family’s power?”

Jake’s face instantly changed. He hadn't expected her to turn the question back on him. “How could the Davidson family maintain its standing if I didn't navigate those circles?” he retorted reflexively. “A family this large needs someone to prop it up.”

“Is that so?” Danielle sneered, her voice dripping with undisguised sarcasm. “But for years, you haven't used your connections to help the family all that much, and yet the Davidsons have managed just fine. Do you really believe your status alone is enough to keep the family unshakable? Or do you think Alexander managed to secure his footing in business and aerospace just by being the ‘scion of the Davidson family’?”

Her words were like daggers, striking Jake’s weak points with precision. For years, Jake had been the nominal head of the family, but in reality, the Davidson empire owed its current scale mostly to Alexander's hard work. Alexander had built NextCore from the ground up, made breakthroughs in the aerospace industry, and won countless honors and profits for the family through his own abilities. Jake’s face turned pale, then red, his confident aura completely deflating. He opened his mouth to argue but found himself at a loss for words.

“Mr. Davidson,” Danielle’s voice became even colder, “instead of trying to persuade me to get back with Alexander, you should be thinking about how to protect what the Davidson family already has.”

“But some things can’t be protected just by running away.”

Gian, however, saw it differently. “Perhaps he doesn’t want to protect it, but to quickly gain something.”
