Gian's eyes locked onto the message on the screen, his pupils constricting.
He immediately realized what had happened.
Kirsten must have seen them together and completely misunderstood the situation.
He slammed his foot on the gas pedal, the car jerking forward with a sudden burst of speed.
Startled, Ms. Gaylord gripped the handle above the door. "Mr. Atwood, slow down!"
Gian didn't even seem to hear her. He yanked his phone from his pocket, pulled up Kirsten's contact, and dialed her number without a second thought.
The phone rang for an agonizingly long time before it finally connected.
Kirsten's voice came through the speaker, layered with a forced, icy calm. "Hello."
"Why are you changing teachers?"
Gian demanded. "Ms. Gaylord is an incredible instructor. Don't cancel your classes just because she knows me."
He was terrified she was misunderstanding his intentions, terrified she was pushing him away again. He couldn't stand the thought of her giving up the one thing that seemed to bring her peace just because of him.
Leaning against the cold wall of her apartment, Kirsten's bitter smile deepened.
Care about her? Worry about her?
It was nothing but pity and guilt.
"Mr. Atwood," Kirsten said softly, her tone dripping with professional distance. "Whether I change teachers or not is entirely my business. You have absolutely no right to interfere."
He opened his mouth to explain, but his throat felt completely paralyzed. No words came out.
Through the receiver, the only sound was the faint rhythm of her breathing.
After a long, suffocating silence, her voice cut through the line like a knife. "If that's all, I'm hanging up."
