Danielle boarded the plane with Niki.

As the aircraft took off, Niki stared out the window at the clouds below.

She clutched the corner of Danielle's sleeve, hesitating for a long time before finally asking in a small voice, "Mommy, are Daddy and that lady getting married?"

Danielle’s hand, which had been sorting through documents, stopped abruptly. Her fingertip scraped against the edge of the paper, leaving a faint crease.

She turned to her daughter. Niki’s eyelashes were lowered, her small face clouded with disappointment.

Danielle felt a gentle tug at her heart. She nodded, keeping her voice incredibly soft. "Yes, sweetie. Daddy has his own life now."

"Does that mean… Daddy won't come to see me anymore?" Niki's voice was thick with unshed tears, her fingers twisting the fabric of her mother's shirt so tightly her knuckles turned white.

Danielle pulled her daughter into a hug, gently stroking her back. Her tone was gentle but firm. "No, of course not. Your daddy will always be your daddy, and he will come to see you."

"No matter what happens, Mommy will always be here with you, okay?"

Niki leaned against her mother and nodded, but she didn't say another word.

The cabin was quiet except for the low hum of the air conditioning. Holding her daughter, Danielle’s heart ached. She knew that the choices adults made often left children to bear the pain, but she had no other option but to comfort Niki and give her the security she needed.

By the time the plane landed at Nexus Prime Airport, it was already evening. Danielle took Niki’s hand and walked out of the terminal. The familiar humid air of Nexus Prime washed over her, and the tension that had been coiled in her shoulders for days finally began to unwind.

When they got home, the nanny had dinner ready. Niki ate a few bites before saying she was sleepy. Danielle carried her to bed, and only after watching her daughter fall into a deep sleep did a sense of peace finally settle over her.
