Chapter 573 For People Like Us, Love Is a Luxury
“Of course. If someone’s going to take responsibility, it’s gotta be Jonathan. No way I’m letting him off easy.”
This woman really was clear–headed.
She had never actually liked Jonathan–what she liked was his money. And she wasn’t shy about admitting it. Most people wouldn’t dare say something like that.
Stella didn’t respond right away.
Rebecca gave a dry laugh. “What? Think I’m pathetic? I get it. People like me are just ants crawling on the ground. Girls like you, born in the clouds, would never understand.”
“I don’t look down on you,” Stella said calmly.
Not everyone was dealt the same hand in life.
If she hadn’t met the Dawson family, if she’d been born into a different home, who’s to say she would’ve been this lucky?
Rebecca smiled bitterly. “It’s fine if you do. I started working when I was fourteen. I’ve done everything- waiting tables, handing out flyers, working retail. You name it, I’ve done it.”
“Later, I found out bartending paid more, so I went for it. Morality doesn’t mean much when you’re broke.”
For some reason, she just kept talking to Stella.
Stella listened silently without interrupting.
Until Rebecca started talking about her relationship with Jonathan.
Stella cut her off. “That’s enough. I already know–Jonathan’s a piece of trash.”
Rebecca paused… then chuckled.
“You’re right. He really is.”
Her voice was emotionless now when she mentioned him.
Maybe she’d meant it all along–she was never after Jonathan himself. Just his money.
Wonder how Jonathan would feel if he ever found out. Probably pathetic.
Stella asked, “You and Danny…?”
“I’m getting married.”
That answered her question.
“What?” Stella blinked. “Married?!”

Rebecca nodded. “Danny says he’ll love me forever. Says he’ll protect me and Pete forever.”
Pete–her son. Technically, that made him Stella’s nephew.
Hearing Rebecca repeat Danny’s promise, Stella didn’t know what to say.
“Do you believe him?”
“Nope,” Rebecca replied flatly.
Stella frowned. “Then why?”
“Danny has status, money. It’s good enough.”
“So, it’s about money again?”
Rebecca fell silent.
She pulled a cigarette case from her purse, lit one, and took a long drag.
Stella studied her carefully. From the side, she looked… almost sad.

Then Rebecca said, “Love’s a luxury for people like you. People like us don’t have time to fall in love.”
“All we can talk about is money. Because…”
She paused, then looked straight at Stella. “Because we’ve been poor for too long.”
Those words stirred something in Stella.
She couldn’t fully understand what Rebecca meant, but she could feel the weight behind it.
Rebecca smoked the cigarette down to the filter.
Then she pulled a card from her purse and handed it to Stella.
“What’s this?” Stella asked.
“It’s for you.”
“I don’t want it.”
She didn’t need the money.
Rebecca smirked. “What, you think it’s dirty?”
“No.”
It wasn’t that. It was just… from everything Rebecca had said, Stella could tell she needed it more.
“Then take it,” Rebecca insisted. “It was meant for you anyway.”

日
When she’d gotten the money from Jonathan, she had set a portion aside for Stella. She’d originally planned to give it to her back in Rivermount.
But something had come up, and the opportunity slipped away.
Now that they were both in Falvaria, she figured–why not now?
Stella frowned. “Meant for me? Why would you go out of your way to help me?”
They’d barely crossed paths before, barely exchanged a word.
Rebecca didn’t answer immediately.

Her mind flashed back to a night she didn’t want to remember–when she’d thought she was about to be assaulted by a group of thugs. But then a beer bottle had crashed nearby, scaring them off.
A warm coat was wrapped around her shoulders… it smelled nice. It felt safe.
She said nothing.
Just stepped forward and pushed the card into Stella’s hand..
Before Stella could react, she turned and walked away.
Stella instinctively moved to chase after her and return it.
But the moment she looked up and saw Rebecca’s retreating back, she froze.
There was something deeply lonely in it.
“Stella!”
She turned to see Marie striding toward her.
“What are you doing out here?” Marie scolded. “What if you ran into another pair of gossiping witches?”
Even though Stella had handled herself well earlier, Marie still worried.
To the Dawson family, Stella was still their baby–someone who always needed protection.
They couldn’t bear the thought of her getting hurt.
“What’s there to be afraid of?” Stella said. “If I run into more trash like them, I’ll just hit back. Besides, after what happened in there, who’s gonna have the nerve to run their mouth now?”

Ch 489 Doesn’t this prove that Dan doesn’t actually have amnesia? Why would he go to the island with a strange woman and why would he steal from Derrick? He doesn’t know them....
Ch 488 I feel like this is going to be what Stella stole in his study in Pagenda or wherever his estate was....
Ch 485 I thought it was going to be the Reed family mine that she robbed, thus taking the Keenes product and leaving them in that situation....
Ch 483 o then, how did the Reeds fine her? How did they not know where she was from?...
Ch 477 Definitely hidden pedo in here, referring to tiny women as little girls in every way possible....
Ch 468 How could Stella inherit her adopted father’s weak stomach constitution?...
Ch 468 Abraham and Marie’s mother has been called Evelyn, Diane and Loretta.. which is it? Evelyn has been the most used....
Ch 465 She still doesn’t know the mistress is Lillian’s aunt?...
Ch 464 Why didn’t she kick her out herself be for she went to attack the mistress…...
Ch 463 This is stupid now. I understand being scared in his presence enough to not think straight, but she’s a lone more often than not and has plenty of time to think things through, especially if she has time to get gossip from Rivermount and report to Stella....
