“Who I am doesn’t matter.” Victor said, his tone almost casual. “But you, Mr. Dale… you should’ve lost everything by now.”

Dale froze.

The smile that had been lingering on Victor’s lips vanished, and even the mockery in his eyes sharpened into an icy gleam.

Victor’s words hit Dale like a blade to the chest.

“Who… who are you?” he demanded.

Now he was certain–they had met before; there had to be deep hatred between them.

But who could he be? Over the years, the Ashen Pact had made plenty of enemies. For the moment, Dale couldn’t recall where they might’ve crossed paths or what kind of feud lay between them.

Still, that one phrase, “lost everything” was enough to rattle him.

Before he could speak again, a sleepy, feminine voice drifted out from inside the room.

“It’s so cold… I wanna cuddle,” Tessa murmured softly.

Victor and Dale both went silent. Their eyes met.

Dale’s lips pressed into a thin line. Victor’s smirk returned, faint and taunting, before he glanced past Dale toward Trevor.

His voice turned cold. “If you knock on this door again, you’d better be ready to lose

your

life.”

With that, Victor stepped back inside.

Dale stood in the corridor, staring at the closed door, his whole body rigid and chilled. His hands curled into fists as he muttered to Trevor, voice low and sharp, “Find out who Victor was before he started working with Mr. Abraham.”

Everyone knew Victor was one of Abraham’s men—and one he trusted deeply. Mr. Abraham had even allowed him to build his own network of power.

That kind of trust wasn’t given lightly; it meant Victor must’ve negotiated his own terms before joining Mr. Abraham.

And anyone with the standing to strike a deal with Abraham… had to come from power

Trevor nodded. “Yes, sir. I’ll start digging right away.”

Dale’s expression remained hard, his voice frigid. “And Tessa

forget it.”

Just saying her name filled his tone with restrained fury and bitter disappointment.

“Ms. Tessa probably just hasn’t fully accepted you as her father,” Trevor offered carefully. “Once she does, she wouldn’t act like this.”

He knew exactly what was eating at Dale, and his words were meant to calm himn.

But Dale only scoffed coldly. “I don’t have a daughter like her.”

A daughter? One who sided with outsiders against her own father? He wanted no part of such a daughter.

Trevor, hearing the anger simmering beneath Dale’s voice, urged quietly, “Even so, sir… you’ll need to make peace with her somehow. Victor said it himself—Ashen Pact’s downfall is aimed at you, not Mr. Abraham or Derrick.”

The reminder darkened Dale’s eyes even more.

His fists trembled, the veins in his hands standing out. “You’re right,” he finally said. “I can’t disown her–not yet.”

He closed his eyes, masking the inferno burning behind them; the rage he felt toward Tessa.

Inside the room-

Tessa’s body burned and chilled by turns, her temperature swinging wildly. She felt flushed on moment, freezing the next.

When she was hot, she craved oranges; when the cold came, she wrapped herself tight in the blanket–but it wasn’t enough. It never was.

Then, as the edge of the blanket lifted, icy air rushed in and sliced through her bones.

Her eyes fluttered open, hazy and weak. She looked at Victor pitifully. “Cold…”

Without a word, he pulled her into his arms.

His body radiated heat like fire; the chill left her instantly. She sighed softly, nuzzling against his chest. So warm… so comfortable…

“I’m so cold,” she mumbled. “Don’t let go… just hold me.”

Dale had no idea how he made it back to Black Mountain. By the time he arrived, it was five in

the morning

The drive through the narrows mountain roads to and from Echo Peak had drained him completely. When he finally returned, exhaustion lined every inch of his face.

Artemis met him at the door, frowning slightly. “Where’s Tessa? Why isn’t she with you? 1 already had her room prepared.”

For that brief moment, she seemed every bit the considerate stepmother.

It should’ve made Dale feel guilty.

But then, the memory of Tessa’s cruel words–Are you infertile?‘–flashed through his mind, and his gaze toward Artemis turned cold.

Lana and Lina didn’t look like him. Not even close.

He thought grimly. Once a trace of doubt slips in, it spreads until it blots out the sky.

And now, even Manny… he was starting to wonder if Manny had ever resembled him at all.
