First the scandal, now the baby? How much dirt does Dan actually have on me? Maric thought bitterly.
Abraham’s voice was ice. “You still haven’t cleared things up? How useless can you be?”
“Hey, that’s not fair,” Derrick shot back. “Do you even know what it feels like when no matter what you say, people don’t believe you? Forget it, you wouldn’t–you’ve got Stella believing every word that comes out of your mouth!”
The moment he said it, his irritation spiked.
Stella believed whatever Abraham said; Abraham, in turn, believed whatever Stella said. He? Not so lucky.
“The problem is,” Abraham said flatly, “you and Dan have zero credibility with her.”
Derrick sputtered, “Wait a minute–you can’t just—”
“Enough. Bring her back. As for the Tom family, I’m going to crush them and feed what’s left to the dogs.”
Derrick froze.
His mouth twitched; he couldn’t quite tell if Abraham was serious. “What’s that supposed to mean?”
“Abraham, don’t push it. Haven’t you already wrecked the Tom family enough these past few years? You really need to grind them into dust now? I haven’t done anything to you–or to Stella!”
Truth be told, Derrick actually sympathized with Dan a little.
Because he’d been in the same boat before–taking the blame for things he hadn’t done. And that feeling… was hell.
Abraham’s voice dropped lower. “Reese is your stepmother’s daughter.”
“What?” Derrick’s brows shot up. “Didn’t that girl confess to you back in the day–and didn’t you throw her out and ban her from being anywhere near Stella?”
Reese had confessed to Abraham.
Even though she’d barely interacted with him while hanging around Stella, she’d clearly been infatuated.

When she finally worked up the nerve to confess, she hadn’t expected Abraham’s heart to be so loyal–so absolute.
The very instant he sensed her intentions, he’d shut it down cold.
Back in Stella’s sophomore year, Reese had suddenly vanished from school. In truth, Abraham had made sure she was removed from Stella’s side.
But now…
“What’s going on? How the heck is she tied to that woman again?”
By “that woman,” he meant his stepmother.
Derrick despised her; everyone knew it.
And Reese–she and Mona were supposed to have nothing to do with each other.
Abraham told him everything that had happened that day–how Melissa had come to Stella, what she’d revealed.
When Derrick heard that Reese had spent the past two years in Hamlin, getting plastic surgery to look like Stella–and that Mona had been flying there constantly, even staying with her–he went silent.
His mind blanked for a long moment before he gave a bitter laugh. “Getting surgery to look like Stella? Guess she’s still not over you.”
“Are you sure,” he added dryly, “there’s really nothing left in the Tom family you want?”
Abraham’s tone was cold steel. “If there isn’t, I’ll crush what’s left anyway.”
“Wait, wait–don’t you think you should get the facts straight first?”
“Does that matter?” Abraham asked, his voice low and razor–sharp.
That single question–does that matter?-left Derrick speechless.
When it came to Stella, Abraham was as unreasonable as ever.
Derrick’s head throbbed.
Whenever it involved Stella, Abraham didn’t hesitate; he just struck.
“Fine, fine! You win,” Derrick grumbled. “But if I bring Marie back, who’s going to handle things with Victor?”

“I’ve made arrangements,” Abraham said coldly.

“So what–you want me to go back and stir up trouble for the Tom family?” Derrick muttered.
He’d figured it out by now–Abraham was ruthless.
After what the Toms had pulled, there was no way he’d let Mona get off easy.
Sure enough, Abraham’s next words confirmed it. “Mrs. Tom’s had it easy for years. A little too easy.”
Derrick’s expression darkened.
The mention of Mona’s comfortable life hit a nerve; his face went grim.
That woman was a thorn lodged deep in his chest.
Especially her position–Mrs. Tom. A title he’d always wanted to rip away from her.
“Fine,” he said at last. “I got it.”
Yes, she’d had it far too easy.
Easy enough to sit there plotting a comeback against Abraham.
But her perfect little plan had already blown up before it even began. Good. Very good.
After hanging up, Derrick went back to Marie’s hospital room.
Just as he reached the door, he heard her on the phone with Dan, voice sharp and venomous.
“I’m getting rid of this baby, you hear me?” she spat.
Dan was in the same hospital–and on the same floor, no less.
