Derrick said, “Yes.”
Dan snapped, “What gives you the right not to get hit? She knew it was you and she didn’t hit you?”
Is there any justice left in the world? Dan was furious.
Derrick replied, “I told you—I’ve got status because of the child.”
“You shameless bastard; you’ve got status because of a child? The baby’s in your belly? What kind of status is that?”
Dan, driven to the edge, spat every curse he could think of. Status because of a child—what a joke.
“‘Status because of the child’—you’re shameless!” Dan raged.
Despite Dan’s furious tirade, Derrick didn’t get mad; he said calmly, “I get how you feel, but that’s the fact—I really didn’t get hit.”
“Oh—wait, my waist got pinched a few times…”
That pushed Dan even further toward madness. So when she was sure it wasn’t hers she beat him to a pulp, but now that she’s sure it’s Derrick’s she only pinched him twice?
Dan hung up in a fury.
Derrick couldn’t help grinning a little—especially picturing how stunned Dan had sounded a moment ago. He was completely dazed.
Marie gave him a sour look. “You getting off on provoking him—does that make you feel accomplished?”
Derrick shrugged. “Not accomplished; satisfied.”
Marie fell silent.
Derrick pulled her into his arms. “Who let him treat you so badly before?” he murmured.
Right—Dan had bullied Marie back then.
So what Derrick was doing now was sort of reclaiming that for her.
Hearing that, Marie’s chest tightened; when she looked at Derrick again, there was a noticeable softening in her eyes. She hadn’t expected him to be taking this personally for her.
Derrick teased, “What—looking at me like that? Think your husband’s handsome?”
Marie scoffed. “As if.”
“Hey, you said you were going to block the road?”
Block the road?
He remembered—Sebastian had called earlier, saying the road had been closed; Marie had done it on purpose. What does she even mean by saying all the roads are closed? Is she seriously blocking the main road out of the airport?
“What?” Derrick answered. That kid—does he want to die? Who on earth gave him the nerve to provoke Marie like that?
After weighing the pros and cons, Derrick simply abandoned Sebastian.
Derrick and Marie returned to the Dawson residence first.
Evelyn still wasn’t home; Abraham was out. Stella was there alone. When Marie saw Stella’s very large belly, she called out as Stella stood up, “Don’t move—sit right there.”
Indeed, with triplets, the belly was much bigger than usual. Marie’s own belly still looked flat for now.
Derrick strode over and sat beside Stella, rubbing her stomach. “It’s already so big.”
Stella smiled happily. “I had the kitchen make a lot of things you like.”
Marie had been worried about Stella all the way back. Reese had done something outrageous; she was terrified Stella might be hurt—after all, she was carrying triplets; if the pregnancy suffered any complications, it would be a disaster.
But Stella didn’t seem upset at all.
“Where’s my brother?” Marie asked.
“Upstairs with Eddie,” Stella replied.
Eddie was back? Even Marie sometimes had trouble dealing with Eddie’s mouth; he said whatever popped into his head—blunt as anything, leaving people wishing his lips could be sewn shut.
