Yvonne was grinding her teeth, the candles completely forgotten.
So Penelope blew them out for her. As the last flame died, the ballroom was plunged into darkness for a moment before the lights came back on. And that's when everyone finally got a clear look at Penelope.
“Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Penelope, the only daughter of Mr. Donald Bishop and his ex-wife, Ms. Edith Laurier. Technically speaking, that makes me the legitimate eldest daughter of the Bishop family. It's my birthday today, and I'd like to thank you all for coming. Please, make yourselves at home and enjoy the party.”
Her words left the crowd stunned and confused.
It wasn't a secret that Donald had another daughter, but it was rumored that Hans refused to acknowledge her, which was why she'd never been seen at Bishop family functions or the Bishop Group.
But her sudden appearance tonight, at an event like this, suggested she intended to fight for her position as heir to the Bishop Group.
But that seemed impossible. The old man doted on Yvonne; that was why he was passing the company to her, a decision that not even his younger son or grandson could sway. What chance did she have?
“Penelope, what exactly are you trying to do?” Yvonne hissed through clenched teeth.
Penelope considered it for a moment. “I didn't have a goal before, but I do now.”
“What is it?”
“I'm going to take the Bishop Group from you.”
Yvonne scoffed. “You and what army?”
“Let's find out.”
It was a bold claim, but Penelope didn't have much leverage. Even if Donald had transferred all his shares in the Bishop Group to her, the controlling interest still belonged to Hans, who would naturally give it to Yvonne.
“She is indeed the daughter of my eldest son and his ex-wife, Edith. However, when they divorced, the girl went with Edith, which means she has no ties to the Bishop family. I do not acknowledge her as my granddaughter, and I will not allow her into the Bishop Group. She would be wise to know her place and not covet what doesn't belong to her.”
The words were so harsh that the guests felt a wave of secondhand embarrassment for Penelope.
Hans was trembling with rage, but this party was too important to be ruined. He took several deep breaths, deciding to ignore Penelope, and led Yvonne to cut the cake.
“Grandpa, she's gone too far!” Yvonne fumed.
“Compose yourself!” Hans whispered to her. “Don't forget the purpose of this party!”
Yvonne clenched her jaw and forced herself to calm down. She took the knife Hans handed her and began to cut the cake.
That's right, she was the star of the show tonight. She couldn't let Penelope steal her thunder.
Just then, another enormous cake was wheeled into the room and placed in front of Penelope.
“Happy birthday, Ms. Laurier. This is your cake!”
