“It's just a paternity test, what's the big deal?” Judy stepped forward, chiding Yvonne. “It's not that your grandfather doesn't trust you. He's just trying to get rid of Penelope.”
After saying that, she turned to Hans.
“Dad, don't worry. I'll have Yvonne take the test right away and give you the results as soon as they're out.”
Hans narrowed his eyes. “Stay out of this.”
“What do you mean, Dad? You don't trust me?”
“I'll oversee this test myself!”
At this, the mother and daughter tensed up. If Hans was personally overseeing the test, how could they fake it?
“Grandpa, you just don't believe me!” Yvonne said, her eyes red.
Hans had navigated the business world for decades; he was no fool. When Yvonne kept using 'trust' as a shield, he couldn't help but become suspicious.
“Yvonne, you know I've poured my entire life into you. I've been grooming you as my successor since you were a little girl. Have I ever wronged you in any way?”
“If you love me so much, why are you making me take a paternity test?”
“Unless you have something to hide, why wouldn't you?”
“I... I have nothing to hide!”
“Then do it!”
“No!”
Hans' gaze sharpened. “Yvonne, I'm giving you one last chance. Are you going to take this test or not?”
Yvonne pressed her lips together. “I'm not doing it!”
Hans froze, his vision blurring. The answer was painfully obvious. The granddaughter he had doted on since she was a child, the one he had cherished and protected, never letting her suffer the slightest grievance, the one to whom he wanted to give everything... wasn't a Bishop at all.
Yvonne looked guilty, but under Hans' persistent questioning, she confessed, “I found out six years ago. I couldn't accept it at first, but... but I thought Grandpa and Dad loved me for who I am, not for whose blood runs in my veins.”
“You knew all along, and you helped your mother hide it from us!”
“Our family was perfectly fine! Did you have to tear everything apart?”
“What about your father? Are you telling me his car accident had nothing to do with you two?”
“I...”
“You old fool, what good will it do you to know every last detail?” Judy cut her daughter off, sneering at Hans. She was done pretending.
“Mom!” Yvonne was startled by her mother's outburst and quickly shook her head at her.
“Silly girl, we can't hide it anymore.” Judy's usual deference to Hans vanished, replaced by a face full of mockery. “You're quite the figure, Hans, yet I've had you fooled for so long. Sometimes, I almost pity you.”
