After Theodore's ruthless rejection, Penelope assumed Heather wouldn't dare try her luck again. Clearly, she had underestimated the woman.
Early the next morning, Theodore drove the kids to school.
Penelope was eating breakfast when Heather suddenly walked up and collapsed to the floor in front of her.
"Ms. Laurier, please let me be Mr. Stapleton's woman! I know it's a shameless request, but I'm completely out of options." Heather broke into loud sobs.
If anyone else had walked in, they would have thought Penelope was viciously abusing the help. Thankfully, Lilian heard the commotion and witnessed the entire pathetic display, freezing in her tracks.
It took Lilian a moment to find her voice. "Heather, you know it's shameless, yet you still say it? Aren't you taking advantage of Ms. Laurier's kindness?"
Asking the wife to let her be the husband's mistress... Was she utterly insane?
"I have to save Heath! As his sister, I would give my life, let alone my body!" Heather seemed totally unhinged. She reached out to grab Penelope's hand, but Penelope shook her off. This only made Heather more frantic. "Ms. Laurier, have some mercy! Save him! I told you I don't want a title, and I won't cause trouble! I just need the money! Men are going to cheat anyway—instead of him finding some random woman outside, just let him have me! I'm clean, and I swear I won't cling to either of you."
Lilian spat in disgust. "Shameless doesn't even begin to cover it. Back in the day, you'd be run out of town and publicly shamed for something like this!"
Penelope wasn't even angry; she just found the woman utterly laughable.
"Is this really the only path you have left to save him?"
"It's easy for you to say that when you hold all the cards, Ms. Laurier."
"So my success means I owe you?"
"You have money, kids, and a husband! You have everything! Just toss me a bone—it won't even affect your life!"
Penelope scoffed. If she didn't need this girl to flush out Norton's killer, she would have slapped her into next week.
