She took a deep breath. “I want to rest. I don't want to talk. I'm exhausted.”
Natalie closed her eyes and rolled over.
Hassan didn't make another sound.
The room descended into a heavy, suffocating silence.
She had only intended to lie down for a moment because her head felt so heavy.
But before she knew it, she drifted off to sleep.
When she finally woke up, the sky outside was almost completely dark, blending into an inky, deep blue.
The fading light filtered through the sheer curtains, casting a moody blue tint over the hardwood floor.
Though she was awake, she kept her eyes shut. The longer she slept, the heavier her head felt, leaving her groggy and miserable.
She fumbled for her phone to check the time. It was a little past eight in the evening.
Propping herself up on one arm, she sat up.
The moment she glanced toward the sofa at the foot of the bed, her entire body went rigid.
She had assumed he left hours ago. But there he was, sitting in the dark with his eyes closed, his head resting against the back of the couch. His raised chin exposed the sharp, prominent line of his throat. Faint shadows settled over his face, deepening the striking angles of his bone structure.
She massaged her temples and climbed out of bed.
As she stood up, the doorbell rang twice.
He clearly hadn't been asleep, just resting his eyes.
The moment the bell chimed, his eyes snapped open.
Seeing that she was awake didn't surprise him at all; he knew her sleeping habits perfectly.
He rose slowly, pinching the bridge of his nose with one hand. His voice was laced with a lazy, sleep-roughened gravel. “I ordered some food to be brought up.”
He figured she would be waking up around this time.
He opened the door, and a staff member wheeled in a cart, arranging the dishes on the table before quietly slipping out.
She stared at the spread of food, letting out a weary sigh. “Didn't I tell you to leave?”
