Natalie lifted her glass and took a small sip of the red wine.
Hearing Ferris's words still made her heart ache a little—not because of what had happened earlier that day.
It was because even someone like Ferris, who barely knew her, could say something like that. Yet the person she had truly poured her heart and soul into had...
A slow surge of grievance welled up from deep within, leaving her chest tight and sour.
She took a few more sips of the smooth wine, forcing the bitter feeling down.
"Yeah," she shook her head, a self-deprecating smile tugging at her lips. "I just had terrible taste. I picked the wrong guy."
Ferris lightly tapped her glass to stop her. "You drink pretty fast. Can you hold your liquor well?"
Glancing down, she realized her glass was already empty. She shook her head and set it aside. "Not really. I guess I'm just a little upset today. I'll stop here. Sorry I can't drink properly with you."
Ferris chuckled. "I'm not the type who needs to drink until they drop. Actually, I prefer people like you who know their limits and can pace themselves. We're the same in that regard—I hate the feeling of losing control."
Natalie forced a polite smile. She didn't mention that she used to be the kind of person who loved drinking without restraint.
Because back then, she had someone at home who would always catch her when she fell.
But not anymore.
Leaving The Springfall with Ferris, she ran into Hassan, Jacob Holt, and Yale Easton, who were stepping out of an elevator on the other side of the main lobby.
She recalled Hassan mentioning he had "important matters to handle."
So drinking and dining with his buddies was apparently more important than her being framed for corporate sabotage.
Recognizing Hassan, Ferris glanced at Natalie.
Jacob shoved his hands into his pockets and looked at Hassan. "Why is Natalie with that blond guy? Who is that?"
Hassan shot him a cool look. "If you want to know, go ask."
Jacob paused. "I was just asking you casually. It's not like I actually care."
Yale continued walking toward the exit. "I'm heading back first."
