The three of them stepped into the elevator. Natalie held her phone to her ear, calling Nancy, but it kept ringing out.
All the while, Joelle's incessant chatter buzzed in her ears.
Natalie's patience snapped. "I'm not going."
The moment the elevator doors opened, she stormed out to find her car.
Joelle looked at Hassan. "What's wrong with Natalie? I didn't offend her, did I?"
Hassan followed Natalie, his tone icy. "You talk too much. You annoyed her."
Joelle quickly stepped forward, blocking his path with a frown. "Do I really talk too much? Seriously?"
Hassan took a step back. His dark eyes locked onto hers, his voice dropping to a low, dismissive register. "I want to spend some time alone with my wife. Go find Jacob and the others to play with."
Joelle's body stiffened. "I heard you and Natalie were getting a divorce."
The man's brow furrowed, but he didn't say another word.
Joelle took his silence as confirmation, a surge of joy blooming in her chest. "Looks like I heard right."
Hassan simply stepped around her and kept walking.
Natalie was already in the driver's seat. Hassan pulled at the passenger door handle, but it was locked. He rapped his knuckles against the window twice.
Inside, Natalie completely ignored him, shifting the car into gear to drive off.
But in the next second, Hassan boldly stepped directly in front of the vehicle.
Natalie slammed on the brakes and rolled down the window. "Are you insane?"
Standing off to the side, Joelle jumped in shock.
Natalie hadn't been pulling away slowly.
Without a word, the man walked over to the window, hit the unlock button on the door panel, opened the passenger door, and slid inside.
Joelle was left standing all alone.
