Joelle was choked by his words, unable to formulate a response.
Over the phone, Zeke reported that the police still had no leads on Yvonne.
Once Zeke finished speaking, Joelle finally found her voice. "I didn't know he was going to punish you. I thought he just had something important to discuss with you privately."
Hassan closed his eyes and leaned heavily against the pillow. His tone was unnervingly calm. "Don't play dumb. You knew exactly what was going to happen. All of you did, but you chose to look the other way. I'm not petty enough to hold a grudge over something like that."
"Hassan! I swear I didn't know."
"Get out."
Perhaps it was the agonizing pain making him lose his usual restraint, but he was hurting too much to even pretend to care. His face was etched with raw impatience.
Joelle's chest tightened. "Natalie didn't come to see you either, did she? And she only stayed behind because she was the one who caused the mess to begin with."
Seeing the lines on his forehead deepen, she quickly backpedaled, "Okay, okay, I won't say another word. Just focus on resting. I'm leaving. I'll leave the painkillers here. Don't let your stubbornness keep you from using them. It's just medication; I'm not going to hold it over your head for a favor."
Hassan said nothing.
Joelle walked out, glancing back at him every few steps.
Once outside the door, she ran into a maid coming to change his bandages. She stopped her. "I left some painkillers on the nightstand. Make sure you sneak them into his treatment when you change his dressings. Also, if Natalie shows up, you must let me know."
The maid agreed.
Joelle knew this maid reported directly to Augustus. Whatever she said would definitely reach the old man's ears.
But she was confident that, after Natalie's idiotic stunt, Augustus personally having someone call her over meant he was actively pushing for her to join the Carlson family.
Otherwise, given how furious Augustus had been that afternoon, she never would have dared to come on her own.
