The person who asked about Gardenia's husband received a sharp nudge from the person sitting next to him.
The neighbor leaned in and whispered, "I heard she's having an affair with Hassan. Stop asking stupid questions."
The atmosphere in the private room shifted uncomfortably.
People exchanged subtle, knowing glances.
"Come on, come on, take a seat! All the food is here," Zachary interjected, swiftly changing the subject.
Gardenia was just about to head toward an empty seat next to Hassan.
Someone called out to her, "Gardenia, come sit by me."
She looked up and saw Lara—styled flawlessly from head to toe—staring right at her with a faint smile.
Her body instantly went rigid.
She had completely forgotten about this woman.
Lara used to bully her too, until Jude stepped in and protected her, ensuring Lara never dared to touch her again.
But Lara knew that Cora was the one who had gone to the hospital to take care of Jude.
In Cora's diary, she wrote about bumping into Lara at the hospital.
Lara had even openly mocked Cora: "Jude is practically a vegetable now. Are you seriously still fantasizing that he's going to wake up and be moved by your devotion? Don't make me laugh. Even his own parents have given up on him. You really think he's ever waking up?"
However, Lara didn't know that Jude had only protected Gardenia because Gardenia had stolen the credit for saving his life.
After a few seconds of hesitation, Gardenia walked over and took the seat.
No matter what, she had to keep a close eye on Lara and make sure she didn't spill a single word about the past.
Lara rested a hand on her neck, smiling as she leaned in. "It looks like you're living a very happy life. Now I can finally relax, my dear friend."
Gardenia forced a polite smile. "I assume you've been doing well yourself?"
"Hehe, of course. We definitely need to stay in touch from now on." Lara let go of her, resting her elbows on the table and propping her chin on the back of her hands. She wore a bright, radiant smile, but her eyes were terrifyingly cold.
"We will..." Gardenia nodded.
She realized she still felt the same pathetic, student-era cowardice whenever she faced Lara. It disgusted her. She was entirely different now.
