Suzie's voice was thick with unshed tears as she finished. So what if he was powerful? She refused to believe he could bend the entire world to his will.
"Oh, really?" Jamie's voice was laced with provocation and threat. "I'd like to see you try."
With that, he turned and strode toward the door.
Seeing him leave, Suzie scrambled after him, blocking his path. "Give me back my bag and my phone!"
Jamie, tall and imposing, glanced down at her, a smirk playing on his lips. "What's the hurry?" he drawled sarcastically. "So eager to call your old flame? Why didn't he answer your calls when you were at the station?"
Suzie froze. "How did you know?" she blurted out, then immediately clamped a hand over her mouth. What was she saying? To anyone listening, it sounded like a confession. He had her so flustered she couldn't think straight.
She cleared her throat and reluctantly explained, "That's not what I meant. I meant, how did you know I called Stella and Oliver for help?"
"I went through your phone," he replied matter-of-factly, as if it were the most normal thing in the world.
Suzie fell silent, her eyes widening in disbelief. It took every ounce of her self-control not to scream at him.
She met his indifferent gaze and demanded angrily, "Jamie! Have you ever heard of personal privacy? What right do you have to go through someone's phone?!"
Her sudden change of topic seemed to strike a nerve. His hand, already on the doorknob, froze. He stood there for a long moment before slowly turning back to face her. His expression was placid. "Do you have proof?"
Suzie was struck dumb. She stared at him, her lips parting, but no words came out. Then, suddenly, she remembered Aaron's strange behavior.
She found her voice, speaking with renewed conviction. "I don't! But you do!"
At this, Jamie stepped back into the room and slowly advanced on her. His gaze was like a laser, seeming to pierce straight through to her soul.
