As she finished speaking, Suzie tried to push herself off his lap. But the second she was free, his hand shot out and yanked her right back down.
"You say you didn't cheat, Suzie. How do you prove that?" he demanded, his voice dangerously close to her ear before she could even recover from the shock.
Suzie was speechless. How could she prove it? She had never had an improper relationship with any other man. How was she supposed to prove her own innocence?
She recalled all the times he had insinuated she was unfaithful. "If you have proof I cheated, then show it to me!" she challenged, her own anger rising to meet his.
This wasn't just about his insults anymore, which no longer cut her as deeply as they once had. Now that the topic was on the table, she wanted to know, once and for all, why he kept accusing her.
Her gaze was unwavering, daring him to explain himself.
But Jamie merely replied, his tone unhurried, "No rush. We'll wait for the paternity test results."
His calm confidence sent a ripple of unease through her. Did he actually have evidence? Proof that she'd been with another man?
Impossible. Besides that one drunken night with him… besides Jamie himself, she had never been intimate with anyone. She could count on one hand the number of men she'd even had a full conversation with.
He wanted to wait for the paternity test? Fine. She was sure he would arrange it as quickly as possible, and if they didn't have to wait in line at a public hospital, the results would come back fast.
He leaned in close, his voice a low, menacing whisper. "If the children are mine, then you are mine. If they aren't… then you, Suzie, will be an enemy of the Baylor family. And you will spend the rest of your life in misery."
His cold, quiet words echoed in her ear like a devil's curse. What was he saying? If the children were his, she was his? What did that even mean? Did he want to take not just the children, but her as well?
She knew the latter was impossible, but she wouldn't let the former happen either. Not a chance. She had once loved him desperately, so much it hurt, but she would never go back to being the invisible, neglected wife by his side. She wouldn't survive it a second time.
"Let's follow your 'if,' Jamie. If the children are yours, you can forget about taking them. I'll fight with everything I have to keep them with me. And if they aren't yours, as you seem to believe, and you dare to lay a hand on them, I will still fight you to the death."
