Just as the thought crossed her mind, Jamie’s hand appeared in her line of sight, a phone resting in his open palm.

“Who do you want to call? You can use my phone.”

Suzie hesitated for a moment but didn’t take it. After a pause, she said coldly, “I need to let Stella know what’s going on. She’ll be worried if she can’t find me.”

“Oh? She’s already been here, with that man, Mr. Cross,” Jamie replied, withdrawing his phone.

“What? Where are they?” Suzie asked, her voice tight with alarm as her face paled. They had been here? When?

Knowing Jamie, and knowing how protective Stella and Oliver were of her, she was sure they wouldn't have left quietly. If they had caused a scene... who knows what might have happened.

As her imagination ran wild, a terrible thought struck her. “Did you lock them up?!”

A bitter smile touched Jamie’s lips. He stepped closer to her, his voice a low query. “Suzie, in your mind, just how evil am I?”

Ignoring his question completely, she pressed on, “What did you do to them?”

Stella had a short fuse and had always been fiercely protective of her, a loyalty that had led her to hate Jamie just as much as Suzie did. As for Oliver… Suzie couldn’t quite read him, but he still believed Jamie was responsible for what had happened to his parents. It wasn't a stretch to think Oliver might do something reckless in a fit of anger.

The more Suzie thought about it, the more her worry grew. If things had gone down as she imagined, Jamie would not have let them go easily.

“Help me with my medicine, and I’ll tell you,” Jamie’s voice cut through her thoughts. He held out the pillbox to her.

Suzie wavered for a second before slowly taking it from him. She opened the box, popped a pill into her palm, and held it out.

The last three words were practically a growl, his eyes glinting with an unreadable light.

Suzie paused, then picked up another pill and offered it to him.

But just as her fingers neared his lips, Jamie suddenly opened his mouth and captured both the pill and her fingertips inside.

Suzie froze, then snatched her hand back in a panic, cursing him silently.

Jamie raised an eyebrow, then calmly took a sip of water to swallow the pill. His eyes, full of smug satisfaction, never left her face.

Suzie shot him a furious glare and turned her back on him.
