A moment later, Jamie’s cool, detached voice came from behind her. “I told them we’re back together and that you’re no longer a suspect. They left.”
Suzie stiffened. Was it really that simple? He probably wasn’t lying. If Oliver had managed to keep his cool, Jamie would have had no reason to harm either of them. With that thought, Suzie decided to let the topic drop.
Her eyes scanned his casual attire, recalling his earlier words. “Where are you taking me today?” she asked directly.
Jamie adjusted his cuffs, answering nonchalantly, “To the hospital…”
He drew out the last word, a cryptic expression on his face. Hearing it, Suzie’s heart began to pound, but she did her best to appear calm.
“What for?”
As soon as the words left her mouth, Jamie’s gaze drifted down from her face, stopping pointedly at her abdomen. Suzie instinctively wrapped her arms around her stomach, her anxiety spiking.
Sensing her growing nervousness, Jamie continued to toy with her. “What are you afraid of?”
He took a step closer.
Suzie frowned, backing away as he advanced. This damn man was becoming more unhinged by the second. He seemed genuinely neurotic.
She continued to retreat, cursing him under her breath, until her heel caught on the leg of a chair. As she lost her balance and started to fall backward, she flailed, her hand instinctively grabbing for support.
Unfortunately, what she grabbed was Jamie’s injured arm as he reached out to steady her. Her fingers not only caught the gauze but dug into it deeply.
Just as she reached the staircase, the sound of frantic footsteps echoed from the entrance.
Suzie instinctively turned to look.
A servant was rushing towards Jamie, her voice laced with panic. “Mr. Baylor… your grandfather is here! He’s already in the courtyard!”
Suzie froze. His grandfather? Richard? What was he doing here? Richard never just showed up; he always called first so Jamie could send a car.
Snapping out of her surprise, she looked at Jamie, who was still standing by the dining table, frowning back at her. Their eyes met, and in that brief, silent exchange, an understanding was reached.
