Staring at her up close, Jamie felt a disquieting sense of unfamiliarity, as if she were a stranger. Her face was deathly pale, her lips were chapped and dry, and her hair, usually so dark and lustrous, seemed to have lost its shine. Strands of it lay messily against her pale skin, making her look exceptionally fragile.
The despair and grief in her eyes startled him. Jamie’s Adam’s apple bobbed. He frowned, speaking each word with deliberate weight. “Suzie, I never wanted to hurt you. What I can’t tolerate is another man’s child in your womb! Understand?!”
Suzie stared at him, her gaze unwavering. “No one cares whether you can tolerate it or not,” she said slowly. “Stop wasting my time and bring the doctors back in. Your hired butchers can get it done quickly. What’s wrong? Are you scared?”
“Stop talking!” Jamie’s grip tightened, his voice a low growl.
“Are you scared? If you just admit you’re scared, I’ll sign whatever you want. I’ll even write a statement saying this was all my idea!” Suzie continued her frenzied tirade, completely ignoring him.
“I told you to stop talking!” Jamie lunged closer, the veins on his forehead bulging as his growl escalated into a roar.
Suzie, her face forced upward, showed no sign of backing down. She glared at him fiercely. “Why should I? You’re just scared… Mmph!”
Her frantic accusations were abruptly silenced. His lips crashed down on hers.
!!!
Her eyes flew wide. He was blocking her words with his mouth. He was kissing her! He was sick, truly, certifiably sick!
“You! You’re a devil…” Suzie cursed, raising her arm to strike him. But as her arm lifted, a wave of discomfort washed over her, and she froze.
In that moment of hesitation, she slowly, fearfully, looked down at the seat beneath her. A dark premonition grew stronger. Unable to see clearly, she shoved Jamie away and scrambled to her feet to inspect the chair.
On the pure white surface were several drops of shockingly bright blood.
Suzie’s trembling hand reached for the hem of her clothes. It was blood. Blood from her own body.
As her lips trembled, unable to form words, she felt herself being lifted into the air again. Gritting his teeth against the pain in his arm, Jamie scooped her up and sprinted out of the operating room.
