Was this just a temporary reprieve because she was unwell?
Suzie studied him, trying to decipher his words.
Perhaps sensing her unspoken question, Jamie clarified, “The surgery is off. Eat.”
At his words, a wave of bittersweet relief washed over Suzie, and her nose tingled.
Suzie paused for a long moment before finally taking the container from him. She started eating slowly, but as the hope of it all being over settled in, a ravenous hunger took hold. In no time, she had finished half of the food on the table.
But throughout the meal, she didn’t say a single word to him.
Jamie, for his part, didn’t seem to have any intention of leaving. He just sat quietly to the side, his gaze seemingly fixed on her.
When Suzie felt full, she leaned back against the headboard, her eyes vacant once more.
She didn’t want to guess what he was doing here or what he had to say. She didn’t want to see him, let alone speak to him.
After a long silence, Jamie finally spoke. “Rest up here. When you’re discharged, I’ll take you back to the manor.”
Take her back to the manor? He said it as if they were a normal couple, coming home from a hospital visit.
Suzie collected herself and replied coldly, “Since the surgery is off, you can leave. Let’s not see each other again.”
With that, she turned her back to him.
Behind her, a sigh escaped Jamie, followed by his low voice. “Can’t you tell? I’m accepting you, and I’m accepting them.”
Suzie turned her head back to look at him as if he were some kind of monster.
But the blanket was yanked away a second later. He held the corner of it, hesitated for a moment, then neatly tucked it around her legs.
“Don’t throw a tantrum. Just stay here and rest,” Jamie ordered softly.
He stood up from the chair. He took a few steps, then paused. “Suzie, answer a question for me.”
Suzie sat there stiffly, offering no response.
Jamie walked back, leaning his arms on the edge of the bed. “The necklace you used to wear, where did it come from?”
At this question, Suzie slowly raised her head to look at him.
The necklace? Hadn’t he thrown it away? Why was he asking about it now?
