Aaron mentally shook his head. When he was running over, his gut instinct had been completely right.
With his boss's elite combat training, he could take down multiple armed men without breaking a sweat. Even if he did slip down a flight of stairs, Jamie had the reflexes to protect his head and vitals. There was absolutely zero chance a fall like this would knock him out cold.
His boss was truly pulling out all the stops for this.
Meanwhile, Suzie saw Aaron shaking his head and immediately assumed the worst—that Jamie was beyond saving. Her entire body went numb.
Did she... did she just accidentally kill him?
No... Even though she still hated him, she didn't want him dead.
Seeing Suzie's face drain of all color, sweat beading on her forehead as she stared blankly at Jamie's face, Aaron felt a twinge of guilt. He quickly cleared his throat to reassure her.
"Ms. Sterling, please don't panic. It's going to take some time for the ambulance to get here. I'll start chest compressions. I need you to do mouth-to-mouth."
When Suzie remained frozen in shock, he raised his voice. "We have to hurry!"
"Oh... oh... right," Suzie stammered, snapping out of her daze.
After Aaron pumped Jamie's chest a few times, Suzie cupped Jamie's face with trembling hands and leaned down to blow air into his mouth. All that mattered in her head was saving a life.
But the man pretending to be dead on the floor had entirely different priorities. Her lips were soft, warm, and sweet. At this rate, he was praying the paramedics would take their time.
Every time Aaron stopped compressions so Suzie could administer rescue breaths, Aaron practically broke his neck staring at the ceiling, utterly floored by his boss's shamelessness.
They repeated the 'resuscitation' cycle several times, but Jamie 'remained unresponsive.'
