"Enough!"
Suzie coldly cut him off, shoving him away with all her strength. Her gaze dropped to his rapidly heaving chest.
"Jamie, you need to stop this! Do you remember what I told you when you dragged me to the hospital to murder my babies?!"
She screamed the words at him, her body trembling as she stumbled backward in a dazed panic.
"Suzie, please, let me explain..."
Jamie took a step forward, but as Suzie backed away, her heel slipped on the edge of the top stair. She pitched backward into empty space.
"Watch out!!!"
In a split second, Jamie grabbed the handrail with one hand and wrapped the other tightly around her slender waist, yanking her flush against his chest. Using his momentum, he leaped down to the step below her, shielding her body with his own.
The sheer terror of the fall sent a cold shock through Suzie's veins. When she finally caught her breath, she realized they were both standing safely on the steps.
"Let go of me," she snapped, pushing hard against his chest to break free from his embrace.
But that single shove threw Jamie off balance. Still fully supporting her weight on the narrow step, his foot slipped.
The motion-sensor lights flickered on just in time for Suzie to watch in absolute horror as he tumbled backward, rolling violently down the flight of stairs until he hit the landing at the bottom. He lay there, completely motionless.
"Ja... Jamie!!!"
Her hands began to violently shake, her voice trembling in terror.
She frantically kicked off her high heels and sprinted down the stairs, dropping to her knees beside him. "Ja... Jamie! Wake... wake up!"
Jamie lay flat on his back, his eyes tightly shut. No matter how loud she screamed his name, he didn't twitch.
