The nurse had said she wasn't allowed to use her phone at work, and besides, they were strangers. Suzie had no obligation to her. But she had no other way to contact Stella.
Seeing the nurse’s head bowed in hesitation, Suzie decided she had to press on. Lowering her voice, she adopted a pitiful tone. “Listen, young lady, to be honest, I was brought here against my will. My family doesn’t even know where I am. They must be going crazy looking for me. Please, do me this one favor and just let me use your phone, okay?”
The nurse’s brow furrowed tightly. She kept glancing towards the door before finally, after much hesitation, revealing the truth.
“Ms. Sterling… I understand your situation, but… Mr. Baylor gave specific orders. He warned all of us not to lend you a phone. And… there are several bodyguards standing right outside the door…”
Suzie froze. She gripped the bedding, suppressing the rage that was building inside her. Her plan was completely ruined.
She should have known. This was how Jamie operated—swift, decisive, and always following through on his word. He had said she was to rest here, and when she recovered, he would take her back to the Baylor Manor.
Leaning back against the headboard, the tiny spark of hope that had ignited within her was extinguished, replaced by utter despair.
Seeing her desolate expression, the nurse couldn’t help but try to console her. “Ms. Sterling, if you ask me, you should just focus on getting better here. Mr. Baylor seems to be treating you very well. For today’s meal, he had the doctor draw up a menu and then hired a top chef to prepare it specially for you. Honestly, all the young nurses at our station are so envious of the way he’s taking care of you. And when you were bleeding, he ordered the doctors to do everything they could to save your babies.”
The sarcastic smile on her face deepened.
What was Jamie playing at? He was always direct, never beating around the bush. What on earth did he want this time? Was he really, as he had claimed, going to accept her and the children?
Those photos, combined with the paternity test results… even if every other man in the world could accept it, Jamie Baylor never would. And even if, by some miracle, he could accept it, could she, Suzie, ever accept going back?!
Why would he keep a woman he despised by his side? To slowly humiliate her? To torture her?
