The next morning, sunlight streamed through the window, filling the hospital room with a gentle glow.
Suzie slowly opened her eyes. From the moment she was hooked up to the nutritional IV until long after breakfast, her gaze remained empty and unfocused.
Lucy tended to her with meticulous care, but Suzie remained silent. Her face was a placid mask, her entire being suffused with the unnerving stillness that follows a violent storm.
She had considered countless ways to escape, but none seemed feasible. Convincing Lucy was out of the question.
As noon approached, the door creaked open, and Jamie appeared once more. Aaron followed close behind, his arms laden with shopping bags of all sizes.
Before Suzie’s eyes could even drift in their direction, she heard Aaron’s voice.
“Mrs. Baylor, Mr. Baylor personally selected these fresh clothes, nutritional supplements, and skincare products for expecting mothers for you.”
Suzie’s gaze shifted slowly, and she cut him off with an icy tone. “I have a name. It’s Suzie.”
Aaron’s face flushed with embarrassment, and he quickly shut his mouth. He set the items down and stepped back, standing respectfully to the side.
With a slight wave of his hand, Jamie dismissed both Aaron and Lucy, who promptly exited the room.
He stood in silence for a moment before pacing to the bedside and sitting down. His voice was devoid of warmth as he asked, “How are you feeling today?”
Suzie shot him a cool glance before turning her gaze away again.
Her indifference didn't seem to bother him. He picked up an apple from the nightstand and began to peel it. “The plan hasn’t changed,” he said casually. “When you’re discharged from here, you’re moving back to the Baylor Manor.”
Suzie glanced at Jamie, unfazed. His brow was furrowed as he stared at the fallen fruit.
As Suzie watched, he suddenly rose to his feet. Thinking she had finally angered him, she instinctively recoiled.
Jamie froze mid-movement, then slowly turned his head to face her. His eyes locked onto hers, a playful glint in them. “What? Afraid I’ll hit you?” he asked.
Suzie swallowed hard but said nothing. She watched as Jamie walked over to the apple, bent down to pick it up, then took it to the washroom. After rinsing it, he returned to the chair.
Once seated, he looked at Suzie and began to eat the apple himself.
Suzie watched the scene with cold disbelief. When had he become so frugal? In the past, he wouldn't even eat something that had fallen onto his side plate.
