Suzie followed reluctantly, her feet moving slowly. She was determined to see what kind of game he was playing this time.
Once inside the gates, Jamie didn't head toward any of the main buildings. Instead, he veered off to the side lawn, stopping by a tranquil pond, seemingly waiting for her to approach.
Suzie felt that he was acting strangely today, though she couldn't quite put her finger on why. She quickened her pace, stopping a short distance away from him.
Jamie, who had his back to her, slowly turned around. The last rays of the evening sun gilded his perfectly sculpted features, casting a noble, golden glow upon him.
Suzie’s admiration for him hadn't started on their engagement day; she had fallen in love with him long ago, when they were just teenagers.
She knew this was no time for sentimental memories, and she refused to dwell on them. So, she spoke directly. “Well? What did you bring me here to say?”
Jamie closed the distance between them, his tall frame leaning slightly toward her. His voice was even gentler than before. “About the divorce… let's postpone it for a while.”
Without a moment's thought, Suzie refused. “No, Jamie. I don't care what your reasons are, I don't agree. We're getting this done tomorrow.”
As she spoke, she took a step back, maintaining her distance from him.
The gesture clearly irritated Jamie. The warmth in his voice vanished, replaced by a chilling coldness. “This isn't a negotiation. I'm informing you.”
He never expected this response. He was the one who had proposed the divorce, yet she seemed more eager to go through with it than he was.
He moved again, stepping closer. A faint, familiar scent filled her senses—the scent she had been obsessed with for over a year, more captivating than any lotion or perfume. It was a physical memory, and her body tensed instinctively. She retreated again, trying to widen the space between them.
But this time, as she retreated, he advanced. He kept closing in until her back hit the garden wall and she had nowhere to go.
“I’ve said what I have to say,” she stated, trying to sound firm despite her trapped position. “If there’s nothing else, I’m leaving.”
