Suzie couldn't make out the words clearly, so she carefully pushed the door open, creating a tiny crack. Holding her breath, she listened again.
"Grandpa, everything has been done as you instructed."
"I will also investigate as you wish. If the results don't change, then we'll let this matter rest."
"If the children are mine, why would she deliberately hide her pregnancy from me..."
"Perhaps she and I were never meant to be..."
Jamie’s words came in fragmented pieces, but the meaning was clear. He was on the phone with Richard, discussing her.
Was Richard forcing him to redo the DNA test? Forcing him to investigate again? Was that why he was holding her here, until he had the results? But if the results came back positive, he would never let her go. He couldn't allow a Baylor heir to be raised elsewhere.
She strained to hear more, but the sound of footsteps echoed from the direction of the staircase.
Just as she straightened up to leave, the study door swung open.
Suzie immediately feigned a casual expression, as if she had just been passing by, and tried to hurry away. But Jamie stepped forward, blocking her path.
"What are you doing up here at this hour?"
Suzie stopped and gave him a cool look, saying nothing.
Seeing her silence, Jamie's frown deepened. "At the bus stop that day," he asked slowly, "why did she hit you?"
Suzie met his gaze, her own unwavering. Who was he putting on this show for? There was no one else here. Why was he suddenly asking questions he'd never cared about before? Even if he was holding her captive, it was surely for a purpose. Did he really have nothing better to do than ask about these trivial matters?
But she fought back the urge to lash out. If she was already planning her escape, it was better to lull him into a false sense of security, to make him think she was willing to stay.
With that in mind, she answered coolly, "Whether parents like a certain child is their issue, not mine. If there's nothing else, I'm going back to my room to rest. I'll come down for dinner."
Without waiting for a reply, she turned and walked back to her bedroom, locking the door behind her. She immediately checked the luggage that the maids had brought back. Just as she expected, it contained only a few changes of clothes. Her ID was gone.
Suzie sighed, telling herself not to dwell on it. The most important thing for now was to rest and keep her strength up.
