As she spoke, Martha lit the coals on the barbecue grill. Once the charcoal was glowing, she pulled a few lamb skewers from a cooler and began showing Suzie the ropes.
"See? You just turn them like this until they're sizzling and releasing their fat, and then they're pretty much done. I also had the butler set up a large fan over here, with the back facing the grill, so the smoke won't get in your eyes..."
As Suzie listened to Martha's instructions and watched her work with practiced ease, a wave of emotion washed over her. After their brief chat, Martha had gone to the trouble of arranging everything just to ensure she wouldn't overtire herself.
Suzie instinctively linked her arm through Martha's. "Martha, you're like family to me."
"Oh, no, you shouldn't say that. You're of such a high station, far above us servants. And you're so kind to us. I feel incredibly lucky to work for someone like you."
A shadow fell over Suzie's expression, and she murmured, almost to herself, "My high station seems to exist only in his orbit. Without it, I'm just someone no one really cares about."
Martha, who had been bent over the grill, heard her and slowly straightened up. She placed the skewer on a plate and looked at Suzie seriously.
"Of course that's not true. I see you for who you are, not because of your family or the man you're married to. You're smart, thoughtful, and effortlessly elegant. And that face of yours? Honestly, there isn't a single actress out there who could outshine you."
Suzie didn't know whether to laugh or cry at Martha's compliments.
Martha frowned slightly. "What is it?"
