"So now you’re flirting with strangers on the sidewalk? Is that what this divorce is really about—so you can run around with whoever you want?"
“Crack!”
A sharp, ringing slap echoed as Suzie's hand connected with Jamie's cheek.
Jamie stared at her, utterly stunned.
Suzie was just as shocked. She froze, then slowly lowered her head, her palm already stinging and red. But the guilt lasted only a few seconds before it vanished. He deserved it. He had insulted her!
"Suzie!"
Jamie's roar made her flinch. She snatched her bag from him, clutching it to her chest, and tried to flee. She had only taken a few steps before her feet suddenly left the ground.
"Let me go!" she cried out, but Jamie had already swept her into his arms, and shoved her into the back of the car.
Before she could scramble for the door, he was inside, slamming it shut and engaging the locks.
Suzie yelled toward the front seat, "Aaron, open the door!"
Aaron sat gripping the steering wheel, too terrified to move. He had seen the whole thing—the great CEO getting slapped on the side of the road. He couldn't begin to imagine what terrifying thing Jamie might do next.
When Aaron remained silent, Suzie's gaze shot back to Jamie.
His expression was a mask of cold fury, radiating a chilling aura. He yanked off his tie, tossing it aside, then unbuttoned his cuffs and began rolling up his sleeves.
Was he going to hit her? Suzie instinctively shrank back against the car door, pressing herself into the corner until there was no more room to retreat.
She slowly dared to open her eyes, only to have her back tense in renewed fear. His face was so close it was almost touching hers.
"Afraid of me?" His husky voice whispered in her ear.
Suzie swallowed hard and turned her face away, trying to hide her nerves.
The next second, he hooked his fingers under her chin, forcing her to look at him. "You slapped me. How are we going to settle this debt?"
Summoning all her courage, Suzie retorted, "And what about you insulting me? How are we going to settle that?"
"Is that so?" Jamie replied casually, his gaze never leaving her face. "Which part of what I said was wrong?"
